Well done, Melanie Lee. I don't think the original song has as many verses as your parody, but you had a lot to say and you said it well. Where does the blame for homelessness belong? Of course, a lot of people and institutions can be blamed; but, interestingly, the only perpetrators that you specify are both Democrat. I commend you for being an equal opportunity parodist.

Brilliantly written. I don't know why anyone would live in New York City, but I'm glad they do, otherwise they would bring their lack of manners and their repressive laws to Kansas ("Home on the Range" is our State song). There are three different versions in the Wikipedia article and they all have six verses. I think your lyrics capture the feel of what it must be like to be one of society's outcasts. Last night, as I stood in line with thousands of more or less affluent people, waiting to attend a concert in Kansas City, Missouri, I saw a man picking up cigarette butts from the sidewalk and stripping the remaining tobacco into a foil pouch. You can see such contrasts in just about any US city. Security code for this comment "ARD". There is a line in the Esperanto version of "Hejm' sur la Step'" that goes "Dum longa rigard', mi scivolis pro ard'" (As I gazed out, I wondered at the glow". I used to know more of the language, this parody brought back some of it.

You're right, you look at the site where that list comes from... "The two most populated metro areas, New York and Los Angeles, also have the highest homeless populations." So the rate isn't the highest, but they still have the most homeless. Anyone can distort facts I guess.

Sorry about the stereotype. But, when I hear a heterosexual New York accent, it seems to make every sentence sound like "F! You!". The few times I have been cussed at on the street in Kansas City, it was by someone with a New York hetero accent. There is also a very distinctive gay New York accent, you can sometimes hear on interview shows. Having that many people crammed into a small area has to be rough on the nervous system. I try to stay out of downtown KCMO for that reason. Yesterday I talked to a couple of Jewish guys from New York. They told me all the crap you have to go through to own a gun in that state. It's almost as bad as trying to register a car in Kansas. That's why I always give thanks for New York and California, so that people who can live that way will have a place to do so and never, ever bring their ideas about government here. Rob, by the way, I know you are one of the good guys. As for the list of cities with highest rates of homelessness, they mostly seem to be places where a person might have a chance of staying alive outdoors at night. The police and Salvation Army keep tabs on the homeless encampments in KC, especially in the winter, since it is all too easy to freeze to death.
