"America, The Beautiful" | Although it does mention America near the end and has the lyric "Oh Beautiful, for spacious skies", they are not sung together with " the". - Floyd DeBarber |
"The Sans Day Carol" | "Sans" in the name of this carol of generally the Christmas season is an archaic word for "saint". Each verse of this carol begins "O the holly bears a berry", followed by, depending on which verse, either "as green as the grass", or "as white as the milk", etc. Each of four verses thus invokes a different color phase for holly berries, each with a simile comparing the color to that of something else. Never is the title mentioned in the lyrics, as it typical of titles of the form "The.............Carol". That opening line "O the holly bears a berry" probably is the lyric by which the song might best be known as if by an alternate title. It is sometimes in fact cited in parentheses with the title. - Mary Ann Brite |
"Carol Of The Bells" | "Christmas is here, bringing good cheer...", "Ding, dong, ding, dong...".(usually accompanied by Christmas bells). - Santa |
"Coventry Carol" | Also known by its first line, "Bye-bye, thou little tiny child". The title "Coventry Carol" is nowhere in the lyrics. - Donna Rand Blitzen |
"The Angels' Song" | "The Angels' Song" is in fact the original title given the song by its author, Edmund H. Sears, But today possibly few even know it by that title. It has become generally known by its first line, "It came upon the midnight clear". - Thessaly Danes |

"While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks"
The Inappropriate Lyrics: Thus spake the seraph and forthwith
Appeared a shining throng Of angels praising God who thus Addressed their joyful song. Why They're Inappropriate: The word seraph (pl. Seraphim) is a Hebrew word whose occurrence in the Bible is limited to instances in the Old Testament book of Isaiah. This song refers to the angels hailing the Birth of Jesus, whose story is told nowhere in the Bible except in the New Testament gospel of Luke. Various words or phrases in the Bible are traditionally (at least) interpreted as referring to specific categories of angels. In addition to Seraph there is another Hebrew word, Cherub (pl. Cherubim) that has been interpreted as another category of angel. And then there's Archangel, a term sometimes used in the New Testament to refer to specific angels. And groups of angels are sometimes referred to as "Heavenly host" (rendered "Heaven's armies" in some modern English translations). Since "Seraph" occurs only in the Old Testament, it is questionable at best to interpret any angelic being referred to in the New Testament as a Seraph.

| "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen"
The Lyrics: The shepherds at those tidings rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding in tempest, storm, and wind. And went to Bethlehem straightway, the Son of God to find. Why: "Wind", at the end of the second line cited refers to the weather phenomenon and should rhyme with "friend" in its normal pronunciation. That would make it not rhyme with "mind" or "find" in the preceeding and following lines. But to make it rhyme, it is sometimes pronounced to rhyme with those other two words. Than makes "wind" SOUND like an entirely different word, a word for what a crooked river does, or once upon a time a word for what one did with one's watch to keep it running, a meaning likely lost on today's youth who grew up in the world of first self-winding watches and then battery operated and mostly didgital watches. In any event, the actual word in the song is the still common word "wind", the weather phenomenon, but to make it rhyme it is often pronounced like its homograph, the becoming-less-common word "wind" possibly more remembered today as the root of "rewind".
