The Lyrics

A friend who has rotten luck with electronics, and often messes them up, once asked if I thought he was computer illiterate. Trying to find some way to console him a bit - he is decent with them - I said that he had some smarts, and coined this term which he wears with pride now. Everyone agrees that this is a great term for him.
Medieval engineer
Tried to fix stuff, I hear.
You said you could do it, you must be a dreamer
You close your eyes and steer.
It seems like you were born with technical might
Of an armored knight.
You thought drums were played
Through those holes you made.

Oops. Wait, I’ll fix that, oops.
Once there was just something loose.
You poked and pulled
Dropped stuff, now I’m told,
You’ve cooked my computer’s goose.

Bright ‘nough not to make a foot pedal of a mouse
Still lots of stuff winds up made worse in your house.
Like some smart guy from twelve hundred tried to tinker
And thus you have been dubbed the medieval engineer.

Medieval engineer.
Such are your skills I fear
I may as well throw my laptop in a river
You’ve gummed up all its gear
Handle the sound for this singer, you were told.
And the plug you pulled.
When he tried to sing
No one heard a thing.

Oops. Wait, I’ll fix this, oops.
Stuff so quickly comes undone.
Though you sure try
‘Nough stuff seems to die
You’re another Gilligan.

Don’t yet cause plumbers or electricians to pout.
But electronics you can turn inside out.
At least you give repairmen work throughout the year
As they fix stuff touched by the medieval engineer.
Believe it or not, he tells me he did poke holes in a drum wondering it it would play better that way when little, and he also pulled the plug on a teacher - who actually sang rather well - as he was about to sing at a school football game, because he didn't think the guy was any good at singing.

I like the ~Medieval Engineer~, . . . He might even be my favorite Musketeer! I Sir, I myself am fond of pencils & rotary phones!

(Amiright Idol) Glad to see you joined in thanks to my subtle suggestion. ;) This was the OS (original song) I was least familar with, thank goodness for Youtube. I like how you changed the rhymes without losing the rhyme scheme itself. It was a very creative idea--stories from true life often make great parody ideas. Be careful about "poetic license"--your "'nough" usage might be kind of hard to comprehend in a live performance or recording (which, ultimately, this compeition is made for). Good luck!

(AmIRight Idol) To expand on Agri's "Poetic License" sentiment. When writing songs that other's will record and you aren't in person, one thing to keep in mind is the person who would be recording your work may not know where you are trying to go with certain choices. That said, I enjoyed your rhyme scheme and topic. The song choice would have been tough though because it is not what I would consider one of his more well known songs, overall good though.

(Idol) This was good, Doug. The biggest difference between a write and a recording is that in a write, you can explain inside references or 'between friends' type humor much easier with comments or footnotes. A recording has to stand alone, and this one, while singable, would lose a fair amount without the top and bottom comments. I echo Aggy's comment about keeping the same rhyme scheme while changing the sounds ( "-ade" to "-eer").

Regarding "'nough", cutting the e out of it to make it pace is often something that only has to be done for written parodies, for the reader to pace it. TOS has a slow enough meter that "enough" could easily be fit in. Look foward to seeing you in the next round.
