The Lyrics

After the arms ban from 1945-55, W. Germany considered a SMG from Erma that was transferred to Mauser (MP-56 to MP-57) which modified the Erma version with better ergonomics, front folding grip and top folding stock with dual safeties above trigger and rear grip. 32 rd mag, 800 rpm. Only 25 made for the Bundeswehr. Rejected in favor of the Uzi (designated MP-2 by 1959). Not to worry though as Walther came up with excellent MPK and MPL for Polizei. Then came phenomenal HKs. Erma original version below.
A weird MP,
A weird MP,
First SMG designed
for West Germany!

Erma not pleased!
Mauser received!
Uzi to beat!

Too complex to proceed
Compared to Israeli SMG!
MP-2 lasted until late 1980s!

Mauser fixes not enough to gloat
Uzi better, until HK tech surpassed both (MP-5 and MP-7 PDW)

Subguns become complicated because the Germans make them so. Ever read Joserand's "Pistols, Revolvers and Ammunition"? Contains a photo of a homemade semiautomatic pocket pistol. The author says that the maker could have built 10 submachineguns in the time it took to produce one pistol. Ever see a diagram or youtube video on the P.A. Luty design?

Luty type had bad safety, was awkward, didn't handle well, but proved DIY SMGs are possible: http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/picture_009-tm-tfb.jpg

Germans have held the edge with SMGs since WW1 to modern day: Bergmann MP-18, Bergmann MP-28, Erma MP-40, Walther MPL and MPK, HK MP-5, and HK MP-7 (technically a PDW). A line of excellence. Now look at the hits and misses from others: Viller-Perosa, Thompson, Reising M-50, M3, Sten, Lanchester, Sterling, PPSh-41, PPS-43, Stechkin, Suomi M1931, Austin, Owen, Type 100, MAS 39, MAT 49, Madsen M50/53, Uzi, Beretta M-12, MAC 10/11, Calico M955, Steyr TMP, FN P-90, Bizon 2, Ruger MP9...

Final note. Erma went on to develop the Erma Panzer 58 AT projectile firing SMG as well as the Erma MP-60 series of SMGs. Mauser countered with its own AT projectile Panzer 59 and Rheinmetall made a MG-60 to replace the MG-42/MG-3. All of these weapons were rejected by the Bundeswehr because it was basically cheaper and more politically expedient to just buy foreign off the shelf. Weapons like the P-38 and MG-42 were too damn good to be replaced so we're retained in modified form or redesignation.
