The Lyrics

Woody Guthrie, 20th century singer-songwriter who wrote "This Land Is Your Land" (and who is the father of Arlo Guthrie), wrote "The Sinking of the Reuben James" in 1941 after the U.S.S. Reuben James was torpedoed by the Nazis off the coast of Iceland in late October [1941], killing 86 and wounding 44. This parody is in response to a challenge from Phil Alexander to write a parody about the following news story: Click HERE to read about The Sinking of The Patriarch
Have you heard of a ship,
Some saw as the new Ark?

Planned by hard clergymen,
Christened "The Patriarch" ?

She flew the Irish flag
With devout crew of three

But tonight she's in her grave
At the bottom of the sea!

Oh
That ship burst into flames,
That ship burst into flames!
"The Patriarch" sank 'neath the cold bounding main!

Oh
That ship burst into flames,
That ship burst into flames!
"The Patriarch" sank 'neath the cold bounding main!

Thank God no men were drowned
In a dark watery grave

When that odd ship went down
All three crew members were saved

'Twas the first day of September
In Two Thousand and Four

When Michael Cox's trawler
Hit that cold ocean floor

Oh
His ship burst into flames,
His ship burst into flames!
"The Patriarch" sank 'neath the cold bounding main!

Oh
His ship burst into flames,
His ship burst into flames!
"The Patriarch" sank 'neath the cold bounding main!

It was there
On the cold
North
At-lantic's deep swell

Michael Cox launched his church-boat
To fight the hounds of hell

Then a whine,
And a rock,
And a great explosion roared ---

Neptune said,
"The Patriarch shall sail my seas no more!"

Oh
That ship burst into flames,
That ship burst into flames!
"The Patriarch" sank 'neath the cold bounding main!

Oh
That ship burst into flames,
That ship burst into flames!
"The Patriarch" sank 'neath the cold bounding main!

Now tonight
There are lights
In Ireland so bright

In the farms
And in the cities
They talk of Cox's plight

But no more Irish Catholics
Will steam the bounding main

In ships
Pumping-up
Cox's ego, pride, and fame!

Oh
Michael Cox is in pain,
Michael Cox is in pain!
His "Patriarch" sank 'neath the cold bounding main!

But
Maybe God made this plain,
Maybe God made this plain:
"Stay home, Michael Cox, please, and don't be a pain!"

He would have needed the world's largest fireproof condom to pull off that rescue.
