The Lyrics

The Dust Bowl, or the Dirty Thirties, was a period of severe dust storms causing major ecological and agricultural damage to American and Canadian prairie lands from 1930 to 1936 (in some areas until 1940). The phenomenon was caused by severe drought coupled with decades of extensive farming without crop rotation, fallow fields, cover crops, or other techniques to prevent wind erosion.Deep plowing of the virgin topsoil of the Great Plains had displaced the natural deep-rooted grasses that normally kept the soil in place and trapped moisture even during periods of drought and high winds.
Their land was dry land
Dirt in the sky land
Turned Oklahoma
To a dust bowl die land
Not a crop could grow there,
Water wouldn't flow there,
Their land became a tragedy

Thousands would wander - with no destination
Fam'lies in convoy - forced immigration
Gone was the homestead
The once green prairie,
Their land became a tragedy

Their land of dry land
A wonder why land
Described by Steinbeck
Of a time gone by land
It was once a grass land
Now a "Grapes of Wrath" land,
Their land became a tragedy

Farmers had gambled - on a livin' of cornstalk
Till the fertile top soil - Covered up with sand rock
Hot sun and no rain
Just grew them more pain
Their land became a tragedy

The great black blizzards
Killed birds and lizards
Could a' used black magic,
But there were no wizards
Moved the kids and spouses
From half-buried houses,
Their land became a tragedy

Rambled lost highways - tenting in places
The weary trav'lers - with their no hope faces
Nothing before them - nothing behind them
Their land became a tragedy

That land of dry land
Made strong men cry land
Steered their jalopies
Toward the western sky land
Settled California - workin' as fruit pickers
Their land became a tragedy

The dust bowl was such a tragedy

A most appropriate melody to remember the millions of Americans displaced by nature and man-made disaster. The Soviets used films such as "The Grapes of Wrath" to show their workers and peasants just how bad things were in the United States. They had to stop when the Russians noticed that the impoverished Americans had "cars", an unthinkable luxury in the "workers paradise", and were free to leave the land and look for better opportunities without getting permission from a commissar. A very good reworking of this song. Would Woody have approved? I think he would.

IMHO, I believe that Stalin was worse than Hitler b/c je killed 30 million of his OWN people which was equal to the entire German carnage for the whole Great Patriotic War. Millions died in the artificial famine he created in the 1930s and his endless purging of his military and aviation designers. It was b/c of Stalin's anti-Intellectual killings that they had no jet fighters, no strategic 4-engine bombers, no advanced rocketry (other than simple Katyusha type), nor AT weapons and assault rifles. The Soviets were far ahead in the 1930s with this tech and Stalin set them back in favor of mass-produced simple designs. What they had was huge numbers of men to sacrifice as well as armor. And in every major battle where the Germans were pushing ahead Stalin ordered his troops at gunpoint to sacrifice themselves to stop them. As Stalin said, "It takes a very brave man NOT to be a Hero of the Soviet Union"!!!

AFW - Curiously, the Ohio River flood of 1937 was the worst on record. But no one chalked it down to man-made "global climate disruption". Epic work here. ;D
