ON STEPS AND STONES - MEETING AT MARBLE ARCH

We will gather all we can.
To the heart of the city
We’re all going to march!
We know what we’re here for,
Resolved to a man.
But, we will need to know more
Where the Met are deployed.

Travers (dressed as a worker)
I can go on ahead, find where they are,
Then get in touch, send a text,
Or if not, phone instead.

Various Workers
Now the workers unite;
Put up a fight.
No holds barred,
Show our might.
And we know we are right!

(Mark spots Catherine in the crowd)

Mark
Hey Catherine, you’re here as well?
I didn’t know that you’d be here!

Catherine
I didn’t know who I should tell,
But I’ll be OK, have no fear.

Mark
There could be trouble don’t you know.
Extremists plan to mingle in.

Catherine
Well, I’m not worried, let them come.
No matter what, we’re going to win.

Mark
Will you do me a favour please
And check to see if my Rosette
Received an email that I sent?
She’s off abroad, in France I bet!

Catherine
What do you know…
What do you care!

(she sends a text to Rosette, but it is intercepted by Connor on his phone)

“I have a message for you
It’s from Mark from the office, you know.
He wants to know if you received his mail;
He’s feeling rather low.”

Connor
What is this text that comes my way?

Catherine
I hope she’s got the message now.

Connor
This text refers to an email I see
I must look for myself.

(He opens a laptop)

First I must answer this text I’ve received here
And say it’s arrived.
With anxious heart I read this mail
And hope it’s not a sorry tale…

(He opens the email…and reads it.)
“My Dear Rosette, you’ve come into my life,
And now you’re far away.
Please may I call you as soon as you’re back
And perhaps I can stay?
If all goes well in this march that I’m on
Perhaps I’ll get a rise!
Then I’ll be able to take you out
For more than fish and fries!
I hope your dad will bring you back
Out from the dark.
Hoping to see you soon, with love from Mark.”

(Connor closes down the laptop. Catherine reflects)
