Original Song Title:

"The General"

Original Performer:

Siegfried Sassoon

Parody Song Title:

"The Censor"

Parody Written by:

Phil Alexander

The Lyrics

Written on hearing that many of Siegfried Sassoon's poems, including this one "The General" were toned down by Sassoon's publisher, who feared they would be censored (or he'd get into trouble for printing them in wartime).

For example, the final line of the original was "But he murdered them both by his plan of attack"
Too dodgy! Too dodgy! The publisher said
When he read Sassoon's poem sent back from the line
I must find some phrasing less pointed instead
For you can't call a General a murderous swine
Siegfried is angry about deaths of men
His publisher doesn't want trouble again

So he toned it right down with one stroke of the pen
