Ok David. This is a pretty well written parody. It's not all that funny though, so I voted 3 there. The choice of song you picked may not be very well known (or if they do know of it, they can't remember how it goes) so perhaps folks won't comment simply because they don't know the song (and then don't vote either). I looked up the top 100 songs of this century and try to pick from those. Just a few friendly suggestions that may help out. But over all I think your parody is good :-)

I assumed you weren't going for funny, but that you managed the mood you seemed to be after, so the five I gave you on funny, is for "mood." The theme is accessible, as far too many people can identify with the main character and his lament and the vocabulary isn't above or below what we'd expect for this "every man" character. Assuming that you weren't shooting for commercial viability, I liked that this parody isn't to an all time super smash mega hit, but to a song that's just always been there, playing in the background... living paycheck to paycheck isn't a single catastrophic event that stands out from other events in a life, it's just how everyday life is. You may or may not have thought of that when you chose the song/theme combination, but on a subconcious level, it does make a good match and I think it strengthens the piece, artistically. (I hope this is the kind of feedback you meant -- if not, please disregard the preceding babble and substitute, "Nice job, David." )

This was posted long before I ever heard of the site. But the theme still resonates nearly 10 years later. I agree that familiarity with the original song is a big factor in whether or not anyone reads your parody. I usually don't look at songs when I'm not familiar with the original.
