The Lyrics

The Tacit Blue (Whale) aircraft was built to test the advances in stealth technology. The USAF, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the Northrop Corp. worked together from 1978 to 1985 to demonstrate that curved surfaces on an aircraft result in a low radar return signal from ground radar. With such a low radar return signal, Tacit Blue demonstrated that such an aircraft could operate close to the battlefield forward line without fear of being discovered by enemy radar. It could continuously monitor enemy forces behind the battlefield and provide targeting information to a ground command center. The aircraft made its first flight in February 1982, and by the conclusion of the program in 1985, had flown 135 times. It had a digital fly-by-wire flight control system to help stabilize the aircraft. Tacit Blue had a single flush inlet on the top of the fuselage to provide air to its two engines. The aircraft was placed on display at Wright Patterson in May 1996. ~Factsheets: Northrop Tacit Blue
The Northrop Tacit Blue
“Whale” flew fine

Stealth research towards the B-2
Odd bird flyin’
Radars defyin’

As DARPA had planned it
Surfaces were round
Signals returned poorly
Not detected over battlegrounds

[And at height didn’t make a sound]

The Northrop Tacit Blue
“Whale” flew fine
Hundred times

‘82
‘82
‘82
It had made its first flight
Took to the air
Program was complete
By ‘85

[Results surprised]

Was stealthy
The Northrop Tacit Blue
“Whale” flew fine
(battlefield radars couldn’t see)

Northrop scrapped a fleet of "flying wing" jets in the 1940's, but it appears they never stopped exploring the technology.

Yes, Northrop was one of the early pioneers of flying wings, but the postwar YB-35s and 49s were mechanically flawed and had poor performance. The B-2 has very little in comoon with the earlier birds other than basic configuration as a flying wing. Its architecture and stealth qualities come from the captured German Horten Ho-IX V3 of 1945 and German plans for the Horten Amerika bomber. Indeed, the old German wing was studied by Northrop using computers to map its fuselage and it's stealth characteristics were studied. Germans had early RAM and anti-radar paint.
