The Lyrics

When the British and French introduced tanks in the latter WW1 stages, the Germans could not decide on which design to proceeed with. They started with a rolling armored wheeled design that was impractical and then decided on a huge, boxy design designated the A7V. Only 20 ever were produced and the majority never saw any combat as they suffered mechanical break-downs. One was lost, 6 were captured, 9 were withdrawn, and 4 were stripped or blown-up. But the Germans had more designs. They had two versions of LK light tanks based on Allied designs captured and an advanced modern-type tank project called the "Oberschlesian" which featured a top turret, two lower MG turrets firing fore and aft and a lower hull with conventional tracks. It was never built. The K-Wagen originally was estimated to run 100 tons and cary 18 men with 2x 400 hp engine, 4x 77mm cannons, and 8x MGs!!! But when component construction began in 1918, the firms decided to reduce the real tonnage of 150 tons down to 120 tons by shortening the planned vehicles. The crew climbed to 22 and the engines were upgraded to 2x DB marine diesels at 650 hp each!!! The armament remained the same and armor protection would be 30mm thick on all sides. It would have been a landship monster... but as fate would have it, only 3 were under construction. One was almost completed, the second was missing engines, and the third was just starting with the body sections. In combat the tank was so heavy that it would have to be shipped to the front by train in four 30 ton sections and assembled in the field!!! K, btw, stood for Kolossal!!! Bonus pic at bottom of giant German transport built...
