As one of the 49er Faithful, I always disliked Raiders owner Al Davis for his litigations and helping to get the Raiders blacked-out due to high ticket prices. But upon his death (1929-2011) Raider Nation must be hurting and Al (sunglasses, sweatsuit, and all) WILL be missed by the NFL. As Head Coach his record was 23-16-3. He took a losing team and turned them around. He was awarded AFL Coach of the Year in 1963 and in 1992 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was also the youngest person to hold the positions of coach and general manager of the Raiders in 1963 at age 33. Was appointed AFL Commisioner in 1966 for 6 weeks before resigning and becoming Raiders managing general partner. From 1967-85 the Raiders won 13 division championships, 1 AFL championship, and three Superbowls (77,81, and 84), making 15 playoff appearances. They won AFC championship in 2002 and was one of two teams to play in the Super Bowl for 4 decades (Steelers also). Al started in 1966 towards ruler supreme of the Raides by buying a 10% stake and became partnered with Valley and McGah- was head of football operations. By 1972 he was the new managing general partner and by 2005 had bought out the shares held by McGah's family. Even as football was his passion and his team under his full control, Al Davis was also equally known for his legal battles and team moves. Rising ticket prices also plagued the Raiders who were routinely blacked-out on TV. Yet Raider Nation survived. Through all the grumbling and complaining, Al was the heart of the Raiders and now there is only left a hole to fill. Seems strange to have the Raiders with no Al Davis... he will be missed by many.
