The Lyrics

This one is about the NAA (North American Aviation) XF-107 (unofficially, the Super Super Sabre) that was developed from the F-100B proposal. It featured an AM (All-Moving) tail, P/Y (Pitch and Yaw) dampeners, automated flight control system, in-flight refueling, and the capability to carry nukes underbelly. But its most striking feature was the above-cockpit dorsal air intake that fed the P& W YJ75-P-9 turbojet. This was known as the VAID (Variable Air Intake Duct). While very efficient regulating air-flow to the engine, it also blocked rear visibility for the pilot and would pose problems with ejections. Nevertheless, in 1956, it flew and was in competition with the XF-105 Thunderchief which won- barely. A legacy of the F-100 Super Sabre, the two surviving XF-107s are now in museums (one at Pima, Az and the other one at the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio). Another "What-If" aircraft that military aviation enthusiasts love...
Super Super Sabre was new
VAID unique for time

NAA in-house design was new
XF-107 flyin’
Made for TAC fightin’

TAC fighter-bomber was demanded
XF-107 air-to-ground
Conventional or nuke bombs deadly
AM tail, P/Y dampeners… hard to shoot it down

Super Super Sabre was new
VAID unique for time
1950s design

1956 it flew
1956 it flew
1956 it flew
Broke Mach 1, then 2
Dorsal intake fed air (to turbojet)
Rear visibility was bad tho’
Pilot ejection a problem too

F-100 legacy
Super Super Sabre was new
VAID unique for time
(F-105 beat it-barely)

Wow! that's weird, looks to me like the jet engine was on the top of the plane... Great parody once again Rob! 5's! :-)

Yes, everyone remembers the dorsal intake for the engine and then with the F-16 it went ventral (underneath)!!!

Doesn't the Russian Sukhoi have its intakes above the wing to avoid sucking in gravel from low quality runways. Americans spend hours combing airfields and flight decks for the tiniest piece of debris. The Russians put their intakes where they can't ingest it. The Americans spent millions trying to develop a pen that would write in zero gravity on space flights. The Russians used pencils.

Yeah, the Russians developed aux. wing intakes to avoid FOD...
