The Lyrics

From "South Pacific". Did you see this? http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080714/ts_alt_afp/usvoteobamamedia_080714163937 http://www.newyorker.com/ OS (sung by Brian Stokes Mitchell!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_j7FJts2cw
Someone spoofed Obama
On New Yorker’s cover.
When did they discover
Michelle’s a terrorist?
A ‘fro on her head.
A gun on her back.
Barack is dressed up
As imam from Iraq!

Portrait of Osama
Hangs above the fireplace.
Flag burns in the log’s place.
Michelle and Bam bump fists.
Oh, what a weird art!
Cartooning’s a scream:
The KKK’s nightmare,
Or Black Panthers’ dream?

Who can excuse it?
Who can tell you why?
Some cry, “Offensive!”
Some will call it “wry”.

Someone spoofed Obama
There on the New Yorker.
Is that mag a dork, or
A clever satirist?
When you run for Prez,
You will be lampooned!
Soon you’ll hang that pic
In a White House bathroom!

Once they have spoofed you,
Gotta let it go.
Once they have spoofed you,
Got…to…let…it…goooooooooo!

Great job! This made me laugh. I can see the Pacholek brigade arriving here soon! 555

Even in the intention to spark healthy discussion, this pic crossed a line...fortunately, you didn't. Points for gettting it in quick in addition to making a good statement.

Sometimes when you rush a parody to keep it timely, you sacrifice humor. But you did a good job on this.

As for the New Yorker, I thought it was a clever visual joke, but they had to know they were in for a sh*tstorm when they published it.

It was a bit on the OTT side, even for a picture intended to highlight the negative campaigning.. nicely done, and as has been mentioned before, kudos for the speediness of the timing

Superb. Probably could have gotten it done commercially.
Love the OS (fave cover is Jay & the Americans), love your nailing both it and the NY. 555+

TT: If I could have done it commercially, where can I do it, and how? The story is only two days old! Can one of you do it? Everyone: thanks for the comments!

ML: Once it's been posted in public, (here, YouTube, whatever), no one would buy it. Check out the criteria in TT's response to McKludge here: http://www.amiright.com/parody/misc/natkingcole118.shtml. If you have something this good, this fast, send it to me before posting. There's an email link at the bottom of my song (it puts you through the CAPTCHA garbage cuz I hate spambots with a passion). I'm hooked up with three production services that provide parody and other comedy material to over a thousand radio stations in all.

Note that they pay very little for lyrics only, although it's a kick to get the check and know your stuff is on the air. Plus, I get an mp3 for my scrapbook, of my song professionally recorded. If you know someone who can put down a *studio quality* recording of it, perhaps to a downloaded karaoke version of the OS (and preferably can either impersonate the singer, if its supposed to be "by" the person being satirized, or else sound like the OS singer -- in my case, Nat King Cole), they'll pay maybe $100-200 if they use it. (I guess as your agent, I take 10%? LOL) Also note that if you sell it, you can't post it anywhere -- the radio stations want *exclusive* rights, so that their listeners have to listen to *their station* to hear your song.

If they won't buy this satire at this point, would they use it for free?
TT - July 16, 2008 - Report this comment
Each individual station pays a fee - maybe monthly, maybe per download, maybe some of both -- to the wholesale producers/suppliers. In return, they're looking for exclusive material (at least, no other station in their area has it). For the wholesaler to provide them with something that "anybody" could have or record would make them feel they're not getting their money's worth from the subscription to the service. Also, if you don't have a professional-quality recording of it, the producer has to spend his money to get it produced. No point, if the stations won't want it. I write lyrics only (can't sing or play), and because of the financial and reputation risks to the producers, I get a lot more rejections than acceptance -- like any other writer in any other field.

It's possible that if you recorded it and sent the CD or mp3 to your local station, they'd play it if they liked it. I understand that you're in NYC, and I don't know if that would make it harder to do this than in a smaller market. But it's possible. Some stations might have on their web site that they accept material from local artists.

I left you a comment at "Love Client #9", which I also wish I could have tried to sell when the news hit. I see it got over 1300 page hits, which is phenomenal -- people are passing it around by buzz. That's exactly what a radio station would want, too -- people calling up and requesting your song. Email me if you need more info. Good luck.
