The Lyrics

Nepenthe is a drug of forgetfulness mentioned in Greek mythology, depicted as originating in Egypt. The word "Nepenthe" first appears in the fourth book (vv. 220-221) of the Odyssey of Homer. Literally, it means "the one that chases away sorrow" (ne = not, penthos = grief, sorrow). In the Odyssey, "Nepenthes pharmakon" (i.e. a drug that chases away sorrow) is a magical potion given to Helen by an Egyptian queen. It quells all sorrows with forgetfulness. The carnivorous plant genus Nepenthes is named after the drug nepenthe. Many scholars think that nepenthe might have been an opium preparation, perhaps similar to laudanum. Alternatively, some believe it could have been an Egyptian wormwood elixir. However, the descriptions in literature of the effects of nepenthe are similar to how the effects of opiates are described. Generally, something capable of causing oblivion of grief or suffering. (Sources: Wikipedia, Webster's)
Oh-oh yes, I await Nepenthe;
Nepenthe's where I want to dwell,
I need a drug to make me a slug;
To opioids I am impelled.

Oh-oh yes, I await Nepenthe. . .
Adrift in a cerebral zone
Where I can tame every bane, every pain,
Bereft of the diurnal drone.

Unreal is the feeling I seek; to leave
The wheeling and dealing and spieling, bad meals.

Yes, I await Nepenthe--
To laugh at the fray and the clowns.
I want in me a shot: 5cc
Pumping in my veins, all around.

Unreal is the feeling I seek; to leave
Bad meals and bad deals and bad wheels, and nad feels.

Yes, I await Nepenthe,
To laugh every day at the clowns.
I got in me a shot: 5cc
Pumping in my veins, all around.
Methedrine--oops! Now I am wound.

I don't care for songs about drugs, but "nepenthe" I remember from The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. "Quaff, oh quaff the sweet nepenthe...."
