Can't believe no comments on this tour-de-armed-force. Perhaps you're just too sophisticated for all of us, Al. Brilliant title switch and, as usual, you hit us with an ancient oldie that deserves a retread every now and then. I have the Allan Jones version (Jack's dad, as I'm sure you know).

Obviously the subject matter has been diligently researched and I'm sure you know more about the wretched protagonists than me. Madame Tojo, who died just last month, insisted to the end that the Imperial war council acted only in defence.

As a long-time resident of Japan, I've gotten to know the people beyond the stereotype and American propaganda, and it brings home to me the inhumanity not of individuals, but of the evil machine and systematic brutalization that is war, and the atrocities it makes ordinary people capable of. In almost every case, all-out conflict could have been avoided and even if initiated, casualties minimized in all sorts of ways. Even the leaders who orchestrate the obscenity have their hands tied by peer pressure, aboard a runaway train to disaster.

No doubt the selection of scapegoats deserved what they got, but there were many who escaped. I'm sure you know about the devil's bargain struck with the sinister 'butchers of Harbin'.

I sometimes wonder about the pangs of conscience experienced by those unfortunate cogs in the wheels of totalitarian ultranationalist juggernauts, whether it be Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, the Red Guard or North Korea and others. What would YOU do when your life and those of your precious family are on the line if you subvert?

At the atom bomb memorial in Hiroshima there was a display of photos of fallen kamikaze, heroic young boys who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Emperor/God and their country. Heroes? No. Victims. Just like every foxhole occupant who was blown to pieces, every child who had their chance at life snuffed out by historical circumstance and everyone who lost a loved one in that sad reflection of the human condition.

I don't call myself Lifeliver for nothing. Have a nice life, everyone! Oh, and watch out for a (much lighter) Japanese-themed parody coming to an Amiright site near you early next week.

Those poor Japanese boys.....but the victims of Nanking, Bataan, Unit 731 and millions more slain under the Rising Sun are still dead. BTW, I lived in Japan 1956-58 as a boy. Played baseball with Japanese kids. Was nine before I heard of Pearl Harbor and Hickam Field. Ordinary folks are just that, true. But the past must not be forgotten as unrepentance can reach into the present in the form of Madame Tojo, Leni Riefenstahl, and others.
