Song Parodies -> "Take Our Hats Off To Borge"

Original Song Title:

"Take Me Out To The Ballgame"

Original Performer:

Kelly/Sinatra, and Victor Borge

Parody Song Title:

"Take Our Hats Off To Borge"

Parody Written by:

Giorgio Coniglio

The Lyrics

The second verse invokes the sort of patron with whom you sometimes have to share the cheap-seats-section of your local ballpark. The verse is modified by the traditional earlier start of lyrics versus music (“Borge-positive version”); the less well-known opposite distortion (“Borge-negative version”) is also shown. The modifications are easier to play/sing with the chord positions inserted.
Victor’s “Clown Prince of Denmark” -
Unique musical gags;
He detached lyrics and melody -
Spiffier spoof than an old parody.
For if you can handle the offset
The cadence will hit the mark,
Seventh Inning home-run you’ll score
At the old ballpark.

Tickets cheap for the ballgame,
Seats right up in the clouds;
We won’t buy overpriced drinks and snacks -
Friends snuck in with a couple six-packs.
Let me hoot and jeer at the home-team;
My date’s dismayed that she came,
For it’s one, two, three beers you’re out
At the old ballgame.

[F] Tickets cheap for the [C] ballgame,
[F] Seats right up in the [C7] clouds
[D7] We won’t buy overpriced [Gm] drinks and snacks -
[G7] Friends snuck in with a [C7] couple six-packs.
Let me [F] hoot and jeer at the [C7] home-team;
My [F7] date’s dismayed that she [Bb] came,
For it’s [Gm7] one, [C#7] two, [F] three beers you’re out
At the [G7] old [C7] ball-[F]-game.

BORGE +ve Version:
……….. (Tickets)
[F] Cheap for the ballgame [C] seats right,
[F] Up in the clouds we [C7] won’t
[D7] Buy overpriced drinks and [Gm] snacks - Friends snuck
[G7] In, with a coup-le [C7] six-packs. Let me
Hoot and [F] jeer at the home-team; [C7] my date’s
Dis-[F7]-mayed that she came, for [Bb] it’s
One, two, [Gm7] three [C#7] beers [F] you’re out at the
Old ball-[G7] game. xxx-xxx.

BORGE –ve Version:

[F] xxx-xxx. Tickets cheap [C] for the
[F] Ballgame, seats right up [C7] in
[D7] The clouds, we won’t buy drinks [Gm] overpriced
[G7] And snacks - Friends snuck in [C7] with a couple

This old gal remembers Victor Borge. How many else do? This surely would succeed when performed. Otherwise, it reads like a doctoral thesis.

Melissa; Sorry you didn't seem to enjoy my piece too much. As Borge performed extensively until his death at age 91, and his popular appearances on childrens' TV shows were replayed, you need only be over age 20 to remember him! My aim with this offering was to keep alive this particular humor-concept (a favorite in my far-off adolescence); also to send up ballpark-yahoos, thesis-type writing, lyric-sheets, old codgers who strum ukuleles, 7th-inning stretches, and this wannabe parodist.

Kansas City Royals are playing unusually well this season. I agree this would be better sung than read, but the first two stanzas do resonate in my mind. Sound effects of the Victor Borge kind are hard to render in print. I have been fortunate to have a couple of my parodies recorded, but it is not an easy thing to get accomplished. Your lyrics are quite well suited to the subject. I will repeat for anyone who sees my comments below their parody that I do not use the numerical rating system at all. Don't infer from a negative 111 rating that I left it, if there is no comment but mine.

5's from somebody who still uses the numerical system

Borge was an amazing talent. Even when you saw him do the same bits over and over again, the humor never got old. Nice job on this GioLio.

Thanx muchly for feedback Warren, Jon and royalist Patrick. And Warren, your clever ps-nym proposal is very appealing. It fits with my self-image as a dyed-in-the-wool Italophile; better than nudnicky namings by that ancient codger Osiris. (Note Osie, that I wrote "dyed")...... GioLio
