Song Parodies -> "The Phil Alexander Song"

Original Song Title:

"The Major-General's Song"

Original Performer:

Gilbert and Sullivan

Parody Song Title:

"The Phil Alexander Song"

Parody Written by:

Red Ant

The Lyrics

"If I DKTOS, it takes a very interesting title to make me check a song out...." - Phil Alexander

I hope this qualifies as "very interesting" since you may not know TOS. ;-)
[intro]

I hope Phil Alexander finds this title very int'resting
It's original though not quite so humorous (no con-TEST-ing!)
Though I have no ideas of what I'm going to write about
I'm sitting behind the keyboard now so I will just type it out

I did a little research; found "Dear Buffy" is his history
Though since it's not dated its submission day is a mystery
I'm hoping since I've brought it up perhaps he will elaborate
(I won't mention things he's wrote about which you need to 'Lubricate'!)

He won't mention things he's wrote about which you need to 'Lubricate'
He won't mention things he's wrote about which you need to 'Lubricate'
He won't mention things he's wrote about which you need to super-'Lubricate'!

'He has expected 1 votes from the ranks of Christianity
But he was surprised by the comments hid with anonymity
So he guesses that is a function of their insecurity'
'Cause I am right and they are wrong'; he wrote it with author-ity

What he says and writes he does so with utmost of author-ity
Moving away from religious topics is my priority!

Further in his listings I see a lot of songs, traditional
Yet not a one to Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible"
And though these rhyming couplets are, well anything but fabulous
I simply do not have Phil Alexander's great vocabulous!

I once joked him about the X's that I say are bastardized
It'z not my fault (nor hiz) that English iz so far from standardized
But back to him he says he cannot find his freezer anymore
My theory is that's 'xactly how his winning Turkey Song was born!

His theory is that's 'xactly how his winning Turkey Song was born
The theory is that's 'xactly how his winning Turkey Song was born
This dreary repetition is really just one of many-many more

Though my intention wasn't a tribute I'll babble on some more
It is just that this silly title got out of hand of course
For sure, the man is incredible with spoofs of "Be OUR Guest" and
I hope Phil Alexander finds this title very int'resting

For sure, the man is incredible with spoofs of "Be OUR Guest" and
I hope Phil Alexander finds this title very int'resting

In fact, well he knows what is meant by heroin and harrowin'
But does he dream at night of Xena: barbarian heroine?*
Well your answer I'm awaiting suprise me with a silly laugh
Don't refer me back your parody "Tell Me DILLIGAF"!

I'd say you've made much progress in the usage of great punnery
No doubt with this posting you'll prob'ly poke a little fun at me
But do I detect a whiff of something in my olfactories
Phil Alexander making "Generals" like he owns factories!

Phil Alexander making "Generals" like he owns factories
Phil Alexander making "Generals" like he owns factories
Phil Alexander making "Generals" like he owns freakin' factories!

Though I've stepped up to this challenge, the ball is really in your court
(to) Say if you like this little ditty (though it's anything but short)
Not sure to flatter but in any event I am finishing
I hope Phil Alexander finds this title very int'resting!

Not sure to flatter but in any event he is finishing
He hopes Phil Alexander finds this title very int'resting!

Hee! The fact that Phil's never done "Simply Irresistible" pretty much changes my view on him forever. Yeah...in a good way. Nice work, Red Ant!

I have never heard this song, but in the past have tried to find mp3s of it(didn't find any). Does this have something to do with the thread on song parody votes(That I understand, I remember reading that on there). This looks well written, interesting and ammusing, that I will say.

The day will be here soon when I am the only one on this sight who has not done this. You make it seem easy. Well done Red Ant, all 5's

BKTOS, I thought it was pretty funny, especially the Dilligaf part, lol555

Have you been rubbing elbows with Stu recently, Red Ant? Another fitting tribute. (and for those who DKTOS, you really don't need to listen to the OS to figure out pacing since every line is written in iambic octameter, just read it aloud)

Good stuff, Red, although I've just come off AFW's, and the difference is I had to re-read a lot of your lines to make them pace properly because, although the syllable count is perfect, unituitive syllable stress kept making me stumble (eg. stressing the "o" in "original" was the first instance - I reckon correct syllable count is important but only a minor first step towards perfect pacing) - but the whole rambling stream-of-consciousness idea was very funny and novel - 555

Do I dream of Xena? Well, perhaps although it should be stressed
That Xena on the telly shows up terminally over-dressed
And "Simply Irresistable" I haven't done, the reason though Is "Addicted to love"'s the only Robert Palmer song I know

But can I simply say that I am touched by this mad-hattery
'Cause I'm a simple chap who's quite susceptible to flattery ;-)

Thanks Arwen, Alvin, Pat, Step-chan, Dirty Hairy, John Barry, AFW, Joel, Cat, Stu, Phil and Tommy Turtle.

Arwen: I suppose I shouldn't mention I've done "Simply Irresistible" 3 times then and have an idea for another....

Step-chan and Joel: Spaff temporarily has the MP3 for this song on his website.

Cat: Answer to that is no. Actually (though this is syllable-perfect) you do need to listen to TOS to get all (or most) of the stresses right. The song is not sung in a completely even tempo; the 2 verses starting with "In fact, when I know what is meant.." and ending with "...has never sat-a-gee" are sung slower than the rest. Many lyrics sheets also do not list the choruses or if they do they don't mention the extra two syllables in the 3rd line of the triple-repeat. Which brings me to...

Stu: The reasons why some of the stresses are off is A) I didn't listen to TOS while making this one (A Red Ant no-no but SOTY voting wore me out from it and I couldn't find my PoP CD) and
B) It was very much stream-of-consciousness given the time frame in which I wrote it, which was slightly over an hour early yesterday morning. Astute observations!

Dirty Hairy: It does get a bit easier by 4th time you do it.

Tommy Turtle: I'm glad you enjoyed "vocabulous"; I thought I'd invented a new word there but having just now Googled it I see that is not the case. Finally:

Phil: I have to agree that while her outfit is fairly revealing she is still overdressed. I think you'd like "Simply Irresistible" if only because the verses resemble 1/2 the Major-General's Song (8 syllables per line). It's a great song to parody. Glad you enjoyed this, and I'm off to tell a (hopefully) funny story of the first time I encountered "DILLIGAF".

With all the Major-General spirit in the air, I actually started my own today after I finally got a good idea for one. I'm already halfway done but I'm going to wait until April to submit it anyway....for obvious reasons. ;)

This has to be the first time that I've commented with poetry But hey, there are a lot of firsts that later become history! The pacing's a bit iffy but I see you put some effort in If this was SOTM then for sure Phil A would vote to win I don't know how I'd vote it, 'cause it's funny, but the pace again A little weird but not as bad as some seen every now and then Hell, who'm I kidding? This song is a study in hilarity ...I think it might be time for ME to write an M-G parody! Yeah I'm done. Good job, Red.

Well, here's another PA (Parody Author) who dreams of Xena (though I normally prefer blond valkyrias), at least it says so in a note in my sketches, and if summer nights here become really hot and sweaty I might find inspiration to take her all the way under my fingertops (via the keyboard) :-(
