Song Parodies -> "Barque Fitzgerald Nature Sinks"

Original Song Title:

"Hark The Herald Angels Sing"

Original Performer:

Felix Mendelssohn

Parody Song Title:

"Barque Fitzgerald Nature Sinks"

Parody Written by:

Merry & Pippin

The Lyrics

Barque Fitzgerald nature sinks
Shores of Gitche-Gumee jinxed
Witch she cursed: November riled
Awed did winter beckon wild
Ore-full from its station, plys
Bound for steelish Cleveland skies
With a skillish choice crew claim
Load is born from Wisconsin
Barque Fitzgerald nature slings
Shore too far, to safety, bring

Night saw highest wavin’ abhorred
Light came breakfastless on board
Lake untimely hold did strain
Trough springs up a hurricane
Broiled no lunch the old cook, he
Spoiled by relentless risen sea
Meet with Jones, of Davy’s cell
Seeing as sailors shot to hell
Barque Fitzgerald wavelets fling
Forlorn hope, to wreckage, cling

Gale at seven torn hatchway breached
Wailed the tongue of Northwindness!
Plight: he smites us, the sea king
Isn’t too pleasin’, trident-ing
Why’s the love of God awry?
Scorned our plans for Whitefish: die
Scores did pray in Detroit church
Mourn for twenty-nine submerged
Barque Fitzgerald’s fables ring
Gordon did of doom-storm sing

Great title. Great lake parody.

Soon, no song shall go un-Wrecked. A nice seasonal variation on this undying theme about dying. I like the use of the challenging inverted sentences a mark of the first tier writers. "Church" rhymed with "submerged", "claim" sort of rhymed with "Wisconsin". One of the best of the second wave of EF parodies.

You know you're barquing up the *Right®* tree when your readers are completely submerged in your lyrical flow... great stuff M&P!!

Ambitious, but I think you pulled it off.

I love trad carols and this is one of my favorites - beautiful OS version cited. As Patrick said, some masterful subbing and rhyming going on here. The title alone is inspired and the use of SOV s/s gives it that old-time hymn feel. 'Oreful from its station plys (plies?)/Bound for steelish Cleveland skies' was a favorite, also the final couplet of each verse. Congratulations, you put me in a Christmas mood, not that easy to do. One small quibble: 'born' should be 'borne' Five golden rings, my trueloves.

How does one pick fave lines when *every single line* is a masterpiece? The whole thing "flows". ;)
Overall syl-matching stands out, esp. the title (glad you ignored TT's advice -- everyone should xD), but the Davy Jones ref was an extra surprise, and the endline was just perfect.

While admiring matching to TOS, shouldn't "Load is born from Wisconsin" have been "borne"? You would still get your perfect match, and extra clever-points for using a homonym. :) :) :)

LOL @ JAB's second sentence.

Apparently. LL and TT composed and posted their (typically lengthy) comments simultaneously -- didn't see his when I posted mine, and no doubt vice versa. Which proves that like great thinkers, great nit-pickers pick alike. ;)

A masterpiece of linguistic conciseness ... whatever the hell that means

Wow - a unique and very beautiful twist on the Edmund Fitzgerald tale. And cleverly done, as always - seeing a Merry and Pippin parody always makes me happy :^) I feel a need for some mulled wine now... I'll toast a 555 to you!
