The Lyrics

It's been a while since I submitted around these parts. This is so far the first song I have tried performing before submitting it here. The New York audience enjoyed it and I hope you all will too. "Brooklyn-bound 'B' train makin' stops at where ever the hell I fill like. All Aboard!"
[ALL]
In N-Y-C
When traffic sucks
And walking blows
We're stuck with this

[LEAD]
When the crowd makes you sit wedged in some guys armpit
That's the subway
Or to read that small map you share some stranger's lap
That's the subway

Confuse me
When they have a C
Turn into an E
And announce Renovation

Or they strike
Make us take a bike
Or just take a hike
Cause they'd like more vacation

When you stand where you are thinking "How clean's this bar?"
That's the subway
When you wait down below with those smells you don't know
For that light...

When you stand with no breeze
And it smells that bad-cheese-in-the-sun way
Then you shake as it makes you go deaf from it's breaks
That's the subway

[ALL]
When some preach relig-un, cause they know we can't run
That's the subway

[LEAD]
That's the subway

[ALL]
When a baby that cries wakes up two homeless guys
That's the subway

[LEAD]
Yes, the subway

[WOMEN]
When you wait...

[MEN]
And you wait and wait...

[WOMEN]
And you wait and wait...

[MEN]
Through the next free election

[WOMEN]
Car Inspection - car inspection

[ALL]
Then you ride

[WOMEN]
But you could have cried
Because you decide

[MEN]
This side's not your direction

[CONDUCTOR]
Track correction

[ALL]
When - the -
Intercom voice sounds like "Mmmmph Aarb Mmnnnmp Fwwwf"

[LEAD]
That's the subway

[ALL]
That's the subway

When you step over rats and it's still two buck flat
That's not right...

[LEAD]
When the size of it means
We get crammed like sardines
In a tub way

Sit and stare
Pull your hair
Say a prayer

[ALL]
We don't care
It's the subway

[LEAD]
The what-way?

[ALL]
That's the subway
It gets there eventually.

We don't have subways in my area..but , this is an excellent blend of pacing, inner and outer rhyming and humor..worth more than fives, but that's the limit, here.

wow, how do you perform all the different roles live, 2nz, or is this the amiright version? - nicely done, muchos gags! - 555

Thanks, John
Thanks, AirFarce
Thanks BigMac
And thanks Stu. You are correct, this is the amiright version. I do a simplified form for the audience. It was actually quite awesome because I got the audience to join me when singing the refrain for the second part of the song.

Great stuff 2nz, particularly "Intercom voice sounds like "Mmmmph Aarb Mmnnnmp Fwwwf"". Got your PM about the recording equipment, I thank you for that. I hope to hear a recording of this sometime soon. 5s.

SOTM - There's no guarantee that it will still be there when you (whoever you are) read this, but I found the original song here:

Even if it stops working, I appreciate that, Peter.

And thanks Miss.Jay, Red Ant and Larry. That's one of my favorites too, Red, and it's ironically the line a messed up during my performance of it.

(SOTM) This one was hilarious, even if Dean Martin sings too fast for me to catch up to him. I kept losing my place as he kept speed-singing. But you described Subways perfectly, I think. 555

(SOTM) That's funny, the three subways I've been on...Chicago, Washington D.C., and Toronto...were all pretty clean, as I remember! I've always wanted to go to New York, but now I know to take the bus! Great job.

(SOTM) Egad! I'll be in NYC soon, and this is what I have to look forward to? Excellent job of painting a not-so-pretty picture.

(SOTM) In Chi-town, we have to figure out which Color goes where (Brown Line, Red Line, etc.)...right now, they are implementing a PINK LINE. Shheee---.......!

(SOTM) You have now discouraged me from ever taking the subway. It's not like I'll travel much un my life much, anway. Brilliant job, 2nz.

(SOTM) I've only been on a subway once, and that was in an Airport in Texas. And everything here happened to me within five minutes... So true, yet so funny!!!

(SOTM) This song seems to bring out the best in parody writers; I've never seen a bad parody of it. What I said above, too. When is the recording going to be posted?
Stuart McArthur - April 29, 2006 - Report this comment
(sotm) well the fact this works well in front of a live audience and gets their participation as well means it's brilliant by definition, 2nz - lots of great snappy gags, like "that bad-cheese-in-the-sun way" and great pacing

SOTM: A bit more to work with than in Baltimore where there's only one line. Good luck on your trip!

Marvellous: I could hear this one being sung - ISTM that it would work very well in performance.

SOTM--Very funny, 2nz! You know I really didn't need a reason to be grateful not to have to deal with mass transit...but thanks for making me feel even better about driving my car every day!
wannabemustangjockey - April 30, 2006 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Interesting approach. I can't imagine good ol' Dean singing this but if you put some grizzled ex-taxi driver in his place...

I've developed a love/hate relationship with Manhattan's mass transit. I love the transit and hate the mass. This is great stuff, Glen. Kudos on all the great lines. And more kudos for having the guts to perform it live. And even MORE kudos for getting the audience to sing along. Woo-hoo!
