The Lyrics

The Metropolitan Opera in New York City is generally referred to as "The Met." Stage directions: The do-wop "la-la-la" and "oh baby" stuff should be sung in operatic voices. I'll leave the "aria interlude" to your imaginations!
(very operatic female voice)
La-la-la-la, La-la-la-la
Tra-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, at the Met

Well, you can go to Lincoln Center

See the jewelry and the spenders at the Met
They'll be singing in Italian

And the stage has fancy stylin' at the Met

Next to the piano is a mezzo-soprano at the Met

Ah, let's go to the Met

Let's go to the Met, (oh baby)

Let's go to the Met, (Figaro!)

Let's go to the Met

Come on, let's go to the Met

Well, they can belt it they can croon it

Wearing outfits quite marooni-sh at the Met

Where the diva sings the loudest

And the tenors are the proudest at the Met

All the glitteratti can have a pah-ty at the Met

Let's go!

Ah, let's go to the Met

Let's go to the Met, (oh baby)

Let's go to the Met, (oh baby)

Let's go to the Met

Come on, let's go to the Met

Let's go!

(aria interlude)

You can see if you can stand it

When they sing from diaphragm-it at the Met
A dramatic orchestration

Musical infatuation at the Met

It's the vocalization that's sweeping the nation at the Met

Well, you can listen to Puccini

But you can't call him a weenie it at the Met
When the fat lady is singing

To the exits you'll be springing at the Met

It's operatics for fanatics at the Met.

Let's go!

Ah, let's go to the Met

Let's go to the Met, (oh baby)

Let's go to the Met, (oh baby)

Let's go to the Met

Come on, let's go to the Met

Let's go!

La-la-la-la, La-la-la-la

Tra-la-la-la, Fa-la-la-la, at the Met!

And you can stick an "s" at the end of "Met" and you'll have a whole new parody Michael Pacholek can love, too!

When you cut-and-paste the link in the previous comment into your browser, you might need to manually delete a " - " hyphen character that Chucky's software appends to the end of the link, before you can make the link work.

OH YEAH...this is my favorite of the day...the mixing of 50s rock n roll and opera is inspired genius

Oh, please, Johnny, all of New York's sports teams are operas. Soap operas. And the Mets, with all the money they're wasting on postseason busts, are now the Yankees' evil twins. (Shut up, Bernard!) Mason, this was a cute idea, and now, the opera is over, because the fat lady is singing five notes.

What Adagio and alvin said about the mix.... (I don't understand the ? at the beginnings; was there another keyboard character meant???) ... Fave line: "When they sing from diaphragm-it". (arpeggio:) Fi - i - i - i - i - i - ive.

Puccini is a weenie! There, I said it! LOL and 555.

Oh, how I wish the met was in Burbank! I'm just dying for some opera, but all our PBS station broadcasts anymore is baby boomer pap. By the way, I think Puccini was the father of the weenies. But Wagner was Da Bomb.

Thanks Adagio, Johnny (I saw "Lend me a Tenor" many years ago in Sturbridge, Mass), alvin, Michael (you're right that every NY team has a soap opera going these days), Tommy (I don't see the ?'s that you see. I'm on a Mac using Safari, maybe that makes a difference), QC79, 2Eagle (ooh, I forgot about Wagner, coulda done something with him!).
Any Tech Geeks Here? - January 03, 2007 - Report this comment
MasonR, TT here... I'm stumped. Viewing your parody with Firefox 2.0 browser, about 80% of the lines start with ? Like this:" ?Let's go to the Met". I looked at the source code for the page, and it shows the same ?. I think that means "a character this browser doesn't recognize", as it would do if viewing Japanese, Cyrillic, etc. with the English viewer. So, I viewed this page with IE 6, and instead of the ? there was a little blank square in the same places. Viewed the source code; same square. I think that's IE's way of saying it doesn't recognize the character, either. But why isn't anyone else seeing this? Surely everyone viewing this isn't on a Mac, and shouldn't the page itself be platform-independent? This has never happened here before.

I'm not much of a tech-head. Can anyone explain this??

Really sorry that this distracted from the commentary, M.R. The parody was great!
Red Ant - January 03, 2007 - Report this comment
I'm tenor-itively giving this 5s!

TT: I'm not sure why your IE and FF browsers are displaying errors; I see no ? or boxes here, however, I have seen numerous recent comments have characters turned into boxes. Probably those sh*tty Microsoft not-so Smart Quotes getting screwed up again. Notepad rules.

I'm stumped, too. I write parodies on Apple's TextEdit, which is pretty much the same as Notepad on a PC, and this is the first time funny characters showed up (or at least were reported). I'll email ChuckieG and see if he has any ideas. In any case, sorry about the distractions and thanks ATGH and Red Ant for the complements!
Tommy Turtle - January 04, 2007 - Report this comment
MasonR, ATGH was moi ("MasonR, TT here"). I used the ATGH nick as a headline to try to get the attention of any techie viewing the overall "recent comments" page... If you do get an answer from CG, could you PM me so I don't miss it here? ... I'm sorry this issue took attention from the very sincere compliments.

Hi Tommy Turtle, yeah I have to stop skimming messages, I sometimes miss stuff ;-) Anyway I heard back from ChuckieG and he says it was probably a funny character. Perhaps because I cut and paste the OS lyrics from a lyrics web site and simply "edited" the original perhaps the funny character came from that. Did the ?'s appear between the la-la-la's at the beginning? My theory is the dashes I imported may be the culprits.

Yes, I'm certain that's it.
Myself, I always copy and paste the OS to a text document (.txt, Notepad). That removes almost all formatting and unusual characters, since Notepad's recognition is much more limited -- pretty much text characters only. Then the parody is written on a separate Notepad box. Sometimes I paste it from there to a Word-formatted Open Office document for more flexibility in editing, but there aren't any gremlin characters since it originated in Notepad.

btw, if you get Firefox 2.0 browser, (free) there is a great little (free) add-on called "Copy Plain Text", which does just what the name implies. You can copy any highly-formatted jazz off of the Web (use ctrl+shift+C instead of ctrl+C), and it will copy the plain text only, without any non-text stuff at all. Convenient, and avoids this issue. I'm sure both are available for Mac, although keys are probably different. If you want to dig into this any further, all of the lines started with a ? except: 1) entire intro verse, la la; 2) V. 1, L. 1 and 3; 3) First line of V. 2, 3, & 4; 4) interlude; 5) V. 5, L. 1 &3, 6) V. 6, L. 3; 7) V. 7, L. 1; and the closing la-tras.

But why didn't anyone else see these?????

Tommy Turtle: Using IE, I now see "
" in front of most of the lines. They weren't there when I first viewed this parody.
