Being In Between

When you are somewhere between
Like if you're not fat but not really slender
You're neither a bum nor are a contender
Not really a prude yet not libertine.
When you do not know quite where you are
Not finished for now but well past beginning
Haven't lost yet but still far from winning
You're firmly stuck in between.

Some say you're alright, some say mediocre,
When what they mean is run-of-the-mill,
No dreamboat yet, you’re not really an ogre,
No alpine summit but not just landfill.
A genius you’re not, still better than jerk
Promises unfulfilled, many missed expectations
A list of failed jobs have led your career to stagnation
The cleverness found in file-clerks.
So you're caught in the midst of extremes
Not fully a part of one world or of the other
You're not anyone's favorite, not even your mother;
One who defines 'in-between.'

Oh you know you’re not in high esteem, just part way!
Unremarkable is how they so often describe you;
At most parties you're just okay,
An also-ran too.
Everyone knows how lackluster you're seen
And merely so in-between.
