Parody Song Title:

"Smells Like Methylated Spirit"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Heat up your flask until it's hot
It's either ether, or it's not
And if it boils when slightly warm
It might be meths or chloroform

Don't know, don't know, don't know, I know x3
Don't know, don't know, don't know

(chorus)

With a fume hood, it's less dangerous
Here's a sample, in containers
I smell solvents and reagents
Here's a sample, it'll stain us
Ethanoic
Means acetic
Aromatic
Make me feel sick
Yeugh!

I thought that what I had was meths
I got it wrong, but then I guessed
Does this stuff smell like pears to you?
Amyl acetate does too

Don't know, don't know, don't know, I know x3
Don't know, don't know, don't know

(chorus)

(Solo)

And I forget I should not taste
And now I guess I don't feel well
It smells so bad, it's bad to smell
This stuff, mercaptoethanol

Don't know, don't know, don't know, I know x3
Don't know, don't know, don't know

(chorus)
With a fume hood, it's less dangerous
Here's a sample, in containers
I smell solvents and reagents
Here's a sample, it'll stain us
Ethanoic
Means acetic
Aromatic
Make me feel sick
A mercaptan
A mercaptan
A mercaptan
Just as an aside: mercaptans (as mentioned towards the end) are the smelliest substances in the world, but also rather poisonous

My father was a chemistry teacher (before becoming a technical author); his father was a physics teacher. I know enough to know that I'd be a lousy teacher, unless of course I could choose the syllabus and present it in verse ;-)

Phil, I think that if I had a chemestry teacher that taught in verses, I might have enjoyed that class...instead I had a chemestry teacher that didnt know how to spell english (im so serrious)..the school hired her to have more minorities, and so 85% of the class failed because she couldnt speak english...we sat there as she wrote on the board "1 + 1 =0"...do you really think Im kidding? I cant make this up!
