The Lyrics

I've been a member of this web community called F1 Rejects, which is a repository of information on infamous Formula One teams and drivers. Thanks to a friend unrelated to the site, I learned about this song, "Pepper," which was used to talk about many of the ways to die in a very hard, very old computer game called Nethack. I figured what better song to talk about teams who died inglorious deaths and tried but failed to grab for glory in (theoretically) the world's premier motorsport?
Mastercard and Lola
Hooked up to build a car
They had built a couple failures
Found the sport a bridge too far
Eifelland wants its own car
They asked the great Colani
He was playing with design and
It came out so very wonky
Eurobrun went racing
Then in nineteen-eighty-nine
They would sit out every Grand Prix
Not once seeing the start line
They were all in love with failure
They fell, some chose to go fighting
Like Ferrari and McLaren but
They were nothing like them

I don't mind the track sometimes
The layout that it shows
Shifting up and down the gears
And running down the road
Flashing past the sponsor ads
The fans who sit and rise
You never know how long you have
Until the engine dies

Some will lose their funds and fold
And lose their cars in crashes
Some will not prequalify
'Cause they're slow as molasses
Some will blame the FIA
And hit it with backbiting
Like Ferrari and McLaren but
Totally not like them

I don't mind the track sometimes
The layout that it shows
Shifting up and down the gears
And running down the road
Flashing past the sponsor ads
The fans who sit and rise
You never know how long you have
Until the engine dies

[the bridge contains snippets from Murray Walker's F1 commentary, garbled and cut together, "What IS Deletraz doing," etc.]

Now Life was quite a piece of work
It started with the engine
It was built all for weight balance
That's not where they were heading
And the chassis, not just slow but
Dangerous to drive in
But next to Andrea Moda
They were saints with wings for flyin'
Once they were Coloni
But their new boss was a pig
Getting funds from lots of shady folks
(at least they had The Stig)
They were all in love with failure
They fell, some chose to go fighting
Like Ferrari and McLaren but
They were nothing like them

I don't mind the track sometimes
The layout that it shows
Shifting up and down the gears
And running down the road
Flashing past the sponsor ads
The fans who sit and rise
You never know how long you have
Until the engine dies

As an F1 fan with a fondness for the original song this is great - especially the "some will..." bridge :)
