The Lyrics

The myth vs the merchandising... and the difference between the original KA BAR 1920s folders and the 1940s USMC "legend"
KA BAR news,
Adolph Kastor, see?
German knives and cutlery
Camillus upped,
Way before World War II,
KA BARs were folders, grips of wood!

KA BAR news,
A new knife need,
Camillus made 1219C
Knife was tough,
Clip point with leather handle too,
Not one stamped KA BAR in WW2!

The trapper's tale was oft misused...
According to official US Navy and USMC records from WW2, not one M2 KA BAR was marked that way. All were stamped Camillus, NY. This American knife icon had a German start and evolved through the US Military and Camillus knife makers later also made by Union Cutlery and a long list of others. The Bear story started in 1923 but was attached to mere folders Grizzly and Baby Grizzly which have no real connection to the 1219C2 which became the M2 knife. Prior to that intro the US started WW2 with the same old M1 trench knife. The British used Fairbairn Sikes knives and the Germans used the Eickhorn bayonets. The SG-42 made in Solingen came later...

When I worked for the auction, I saw a lot of PAL RH-36 knives. Shorter than the Ka-Bar. Leather washer grips. When I think of a Grizzly, I think of a large switchblade for hunting.

and here I thought the KA BAR was going to be some kind of new candy bar... I wonder why I immediately thought of food? 455

KA BAR comes from the old trapper story of being confronted by a bear and his gun jammed, so he used a Camillus knife instead. His letter was poorly written so "Kill A Bear" came out as K a bar which was turned into KA BAR for marketing. This had nothing to do with the latter WW2 KA BAR which was the Model 1219C-2 made by Camillus with US military input. And that was changed to simply M2 knife (Mark II). Most combat knife guys go crazy over the KA BAR and Fairbairn Sykes Allied combat knives, but Germany had hundreds of knives. Hitler Youth blades, SS ceremonial knives, all military branches and Govt ceremonial daggers, Army boot knives, paratrooper gravity and anti-gravity knives, and so on. Most German infantry just used the K98 Eickhorn bayonets long or short (7"-12"). Today's best combat knives are still German made by Eickhorn, Puma, and Boker Solingen. KSK uses the KM3000. KA BAR fascination is a US thing like combat shotguns. Germans would rather use a 40mm grenade launcher attached to a G-36! But still, Germany invented crystal steel knives which are still under development. These use metal shavings and diamond points during the forging process to create 4-way cutting edges and surfaces. Rips chunks out of materials and human flesh. Will cut through metal like the Jaws of Life fire depts use! FYI

The Germans were sure fond of flash dress daggers for ranking officers and govt/Party officials. The only one with a cutting edge was the HJ knife. I wonder if any SA guy ever stabbed a Rotfront guy during a riot, using his fancy sticker. That might have hurt its collector value. Unless, of course, you could prove it. I read a story about some home front campaign to send donated knives to US soldiers during WWii. One of the knives collected was a HItler Jugend camp knife. Maybe some Bundist disposing of a memory that wasn't politically correct to hang onto.
