The Lyrics

Going back over the popular take on the origin of the word kangaroo which is still debated in some circles. The original story concerned Captain Cook asking an Aborigine the name of the grey hopping animal in 1770. The answer was "kangaroo", but since the question was misheard was translated as roughly either "I don't know" or "I don't understand." Later, in the 1970s this was supposedly refuted after a study of the Guugu Yimidhirr language as related to ganguruu for the grey. One assumed anglicized or morphed into kangaroo as recorded in Cook's log. But since there are many Aboriginal languages, other names got recorded. Captain King wrote Meenuah which some argue meant "edible animal" (Minha) and there is another tribe that called it a Jangaruk! So, which is it???
Name of roo?
Aborigine
Kangaroo or Ganguruu, maybe?
Maybe not as such,
Origin from log of Captain Cook
Question asked Abo he might have mistook!

"I don't understand."

Name of roo?
1820
Captain King wrote Meenuah- see?
Just a bit too much,
Confusion on name of hopping "roo"
Add Jangaruk to that list too!!!

Ever had the meat? It's good for stew!!!
(Not just dog food)
Yes, I've tried Kangaroo meat. Tastes like typical game meat, but more moist than venison, a bit leaner than bison... I prefer Ostrich.

California has banned Kangaroo products over the objection of Australia. Mostly over its skin and as dog food. I ate Kangaroo AND wild Mallard in Las Vegas decades ago. Also, first taste of the best beef in the world- Kobe (Wagyu cattle). If you eat exotic red meat, eat Ostrich which is leaner and more healthy for you. Walmarts in my area carry bison meat, but it's not that great.
