The Lyrics

Okay, so this is the deal.... This whole song is a riddle, or rather a set of riddles. Every single word is part of a reference to either a movie, a video game, TV show, musician, etc. Each reference can be any length but are generally pretty short, and not all the references have to do with the one before/after it, but some of them do. In the bottom comments section see if you can identify any of them. Difficulty ranges from pretty easy to damn near impossible. In a while I'll post a "solution" version of the song, explaining what each line means and refers to. Good luck!
Backseat driver always underneath the covers
When in doubt, fire i'll get in the way
You be standing on the corner talking all that kufuffin
And you gotta keep the homies away
My man paul blake was a real rad greedo
In the times of an exorcist
When I'm back to the valley
He'll be hip with an alley
And'll try to give yo momma a kiss, like this

He saw people in the halls in the school
WIth their feet high up in the air
one to six, no seven, nine and ten, twelve a weapon,
And the bros on a brewin' bear.
So I took a big chance at the high school dance
With my hand on top of brian who played
Wasn't smokin' sweet salmon I was dodgin' and a rammin'
And I know my love is here essay
But I'm asking you
What this mean?
What this mean?
What this mean?
What this mean?
I'm just checkin' a list...

Like this

Spoon made corny lotsa cash and like a slave he
Took a job with a Mr. T.
There was three men chasing shorty steven man dozen magic picture poppin' sweepin' at me
I was a cameo junkie and another famous daddy
Little boys are a something I missed
But an X-rated fable
Rollin' underneath the table
Was awaker and a little fish
I like this!

I'm asking you
What this mean?
What this mean?
What this mean?
What this mean?
What this mean?
What this mean?
What this mean?
Talk to me!
Just show me the cash
Free hat.

I think I spotted "Get Shorty" and "Jerry McGuire," but I'm probably wrong. Fun idea!!
DarkJon64 - November 18, 2004 - Report this comment
Jerry McGuire is one, Get shorty is not!

I think I spotted "Sixteen Candles." Did I?

And I KNOW I know what "Free Hat" was from but I can't remember and it's making me crazy!

AND I agree with Melhi - fun idea!

The Sixth sense, yes! Sixteen candles, no. Free Hat.....;)

Clever idea and well executed Jon! And I don't know a single one of them, which, since I hate TV, is good! ;-)

Line 2 is about Robin Williams. Line 10 John Mayer? Sprinkled throughout: Brian Jones? Mario Van Peebles (Spoon who worked for Mr. T?--he was in a show called Sonny Spoon, but I can't figure out the Mr. T link)? Michael Jackson? This was a bit of fun, but a little too arcane. Reminds me of the lyrics of the early Residents (cf. the entry for 'Not Available' or 'Duck Stab/Buster & Glen' at www.rzweb.net). I think we could see more of this type of stuff in the future. 545

Nothing solid there.... Robin Williams is the closest, you've got the right idea but the wrong subject;) The word spoon does refer to a spoon... like, the utensil. That's far from the answer, just a hint! And keep in mind it's "a Mr. T", not "THE Mr. T". If my real full name was Dark Jon, people would probably call me Mr. D. in a song like this.

That's the sixth sense bit, right?

"Walk this way": Run DMC and Aerosmith?
DarkJon64 - November 19, 2004 - Report this comment
Yes that is the sixth sense bit! But the high school dance refers to another high school dance.
