Barrage balloons were not much deterrence to German aircraft or the V-1s due to height restrictions. They usually are used for defense against low flying aircraft against factories and training facilities. The Espenlaub Flugzeugwerk made some strange rollplans and geometric-shaped barrage balloons during WW2 that baffled the Allies and also had an armed war-kite Vogelschreck (literally bird terror for scarecrow) that was a factory defense weapon. The kite was autonomous and if you shot at it, that would trigger a barrage of unguided solid fuel rockets into that direction. It was used against marauders seeking targets of opportunity after the bombers turned back towards France. V-bombs were largely killed by AAA with proximity fuses and prop fighters, although the Gloster Meteor "Meatbox" killed some too. The most absurd idea was a Brit bubble machine for fouling the Argus pulsejet of the V-1. Was the U-Blo (pronounced oo-blow) which was ridiculous... but at least one demonstration around London amused the kids!!!

In WW2 Britain stood alone in 1940 and the USSR broke the back of the German Army with the fiercest fighting of WW2 on the ground from '41-'45. The USAAF led in strategic bombing and developed the A-bomb, fought in all 3 theaters. But Germany had several other bombs equal in destruction testing in March 1945 (area of 4.5 sq miles wiped out): FAEs, radiologicals, liquid-air bomb, nerve gases for artillery and air delivery, and Nowak's Molecular bomb proposal. And they were building a time machine which is unprecendented for the science of that time.
