When I was in the US Army, during AIT (Advanced Individual Training) as a Food Service Specialist (92G10) or "cook", I was stationed at Ft Lee, Virginia, in 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 266 Quartermaster Battalion. Our mascot name was the Bulldogs, and we were very proud of our unit. Our platoon drill sergeant was Senior Drill Sergeant Brooks (E8 Master Sergeant), who was so easy-going and laid-back, that he instructed us to call him "Senior Drill." We often barked as we marched in cadence and had several cadences that boasted of the Bulldogs' superiority over our competition cooking training units, especially Charlie Co and Mike Co. I wrote this song and sang it for him during his birthday party, in which we held a talent show, featuring skits and songs. We were cooks with a lot of time on our hands, which is rare for any military unit. None of the people in the platoon were familiar with this band or the song, so everything was new to them, which they really liked. Senior Drill Brooks absolutely loved it, and eventually the song was learned by everyone in the company and it was sung in cadence (without repeat) as our unit motto song, as we didn't have one for several weeks until I introduced this song. The only company chant we had so far was "Bulldogs run the pound!" which had been longstanding with the unit. Then in the second week, I introduced "We cook the meat but chew the bones" for 1st Platoon's formation motto.. Although it's more about the love of our unit and admiration of Senior Drill Brooks than a comedy, it's a song I'm glad to have written for every Bravo Bulldog, past, present and future, especially the greatly beloved Senior Drill Brooks.
