The Lyrics

As promised, I kept away from politics with this. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Cardinal fan and I wanted to express my frustration with their inconsistent play this year. If you're not a baseball fan, you might not be able to follow this.
In a ballpark in St. Louis,
We’ll stand and raise a cheer.
The outfield’s taking fungoes
While we drink warm ballpark beer
We’ll rise and hail our nation:
We’re loyal, one and all
We’ll rock the park’s foundations
When the crew chief yells “Play Ball!”

Going up in the standings (ANYDAY!)
From a sub-500 record, we’ll reclaim our winning ways.
Going up in the standings (ANYDAY!)
We’ll pitch the shutouts, score the runs, stop losing games we should have won. (SO YOU SAY! SO YOU SAY!)

From the outfield speed of Fowler
To Yadi’s rocket arm,
We’ll scare the competition with our quick return to form.
There’s Brewers in Milwaukee,
There’s bums in Dodger Blue,
And when we done those bastards in, we’ll catch the Cubbies, too.

Going up in the standings (COME WHAT MAY!)
From a tendency to blunder
To more smart and plucky play.
Going up in the standings (COME WHAT MAY!)
We’ll pitch the shutouts, score the runs,
Stop losing games we should have won. (MAKE HEADWAY! MAKE HEADWAY!)

From Tommy Pham’s big impact
To Waino’s wicked curve
To a proud and faithful fanbase whose loyalty won’t swerve
We’ll run and pitch, get timely hits, and take the extra base.
We really don’t deserve it, but we’re in a pennant race!

Going up in the standings (RIGHT AWAY!)
From a summer of frustration
To consistent, sharp displays
Going up in the standings (RIGHT AWAY!)
We’ll pitch the shutouts, scores the runs, stop losing games we should have won. (YEAH, OKAY! YEAH. OKAY!)

This season’s done us dirty.
We just can’t find our touch.
Piscotty can’t stay healthy and then Grichuk fans too much.
So, we’ll finish off the leavings
Of flat eight-dollar beers
And trudge out from the ballpark saying, “Wait until next year!”

Climbing up in the standings (AIN’T NO WAY!)
From a lock to miss the playoffs to a cure for our dismay.
Climbing up in the standings (AIN’T NO WAY!)
We’ll pitch the shutouts, scores the runs, stop losing games we should have won. (FADE AWAY! FADE AWAY! FADE AWAY!)

Well I've been trying to keep my mouth shut around here but if you're gonna keep writing great stuff it'll be difficult. Not a Cards fan but a recovering Cubs fan (the cure was so complete I barely cared last year, though it was kind of cool I guess). Anyway, it's weird to see your team in that role but would it surprise anyone if they finished strong and made some noise at the end? It's a quality organization, I remember being very jealous for years. Oh, and the parody, of course, is spot on. I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to see someone doing Pogues songs and doing them this well. Awesome job.

Thanks again, Claude. A fellow Pogues fan AND a fellow baseball fan? Were we separated at birth or something? I'm not completely satisfied with the "Up in the division" line in the choruses, because it's one syllable off from the original. But I wasn't able to improve on it, so I put up what I had.

Yeah, I'm gonna freak out if your next parody is about your kumquat fetish. (Just kidding). I get what you mean about the syllable count, and some people are very anal about that, but to me it depends on how easy it would be to actually sing it if it were recorded. In this case, it would be no problem at all; he says "-politan" really fast in the original so to be honest, I didn't even notice.

No kumquat fetish here, but I'm a chubby chaser who was in the closet about it for too much of my adult life. Maybe I'll build a parody around that.

Haha the only thing I will say about that is my wife would be the first to admit she wouldn't mind losing a few pounds...so just freaking out a little bit...will stay tuned for your "ooh what a chubby fan he was" ELP parody

I was actually thinking about going Pogue again. "Dark Streets of London," to be more specific. So far ... I love to look at her big rounded butt In skin-tight slacks she can hardly zip shut

I'll do a chubb chaser parody, PP, if you'll do one. I'll back you up, just as I'm willing to back up any BBW who bends over and says, "Take me, you beast." ... Really, I stand behind that sort of thing 100%.
