The Lyrics

As part of a parody writing competition, it'd be nice if I could find recordings to listen to that I don't have to buy online or borrow the vinyl record. That's what the first half of this song is about...then the second half is my good-natured self deprecation. Original Song
Parody writing contest...
And the next artist is named Prince
I know he was big in the 80’s
I must start writing
Only know his hits

Finding his songs is so hard
I tried my searching on YouTube
I only find random-ass covers
This can not be...
I can not write with no tune!

The deadline now is looming
But I can not write, that’s so cold (So cold)
Maybe “Prince” I’m just misspelling
A simple word with six letters, just no!
Purple Rain and all the others
They’re not on Spotify (Not even Spotify!)
I won’t buy the song on iTunes
Won’t pay one-twenty-nine
[for] When Doves Cry

Trying to match the rhythm
I think I’m getting it right
This song came out, I was not thought of...
Was born in ‘90
It’s before my time!

Something I’m not understanding
Record stores are just so old (They’re so old)
No one my age knows your talent
Won’t borrow records from father, too old
There’s even groups like the Beatles
They are on Spotify (C’mon, give it a try!)
No one from this generation
Millennials won’t buy
When Doves Cry

So now this parody’s scrambling
For topics, I just do not know (Why’s ice cream so cold?!)
Maybe a love song, or something (Please don’t, please don’t write yet another)
Maybe about a dog collar, who knows? (Won’t work, hope you know)
Now this song is almost over (Maybe I should just start over)
Not perfect, I won’t lie (I won’t be, won’t be satisfied)
Don’t know if this will go over (Why’d we pick Prince!? Why?)
Though it may not sound right...

Still, I tried
Least I tried (Don’t cry, you tried)
When Doves Cry (New song next time)

Don't Cry (you tried)
(repeat and fade)

Well played, I love the approach for the contest :)

Not bad at all! I was going through the same frustration when I was trying to find the original song on Youtube or any of Prince's songs actually. Really drives me up the dang wall. What is up with Prince anyways?

The title nearly made me think it's a parody of a Madonna song from one of the few movies she starred in that wasn't a complete trash. Yeah it hit the nail right on as it can happen when some songs are hardly available to be parodied.

Max, you are thinking of Madonna's "Don't Cry for Me Argentina"

This reads exactly as something I would have written. Great minds think alike.

(Artistry) I do love a good meta-parody, and this one of the goodest I've ever read! Wait, that doesn't make sense...just like Prince refusing to have his songs on Youtube! Zing! Seriously though, great parody here, 555!

(Artistry) I think this may be my favorite meta-parody ever. It was funny on more than just that level though, which made it really work. A little poking fun at Prince helped too ;).
