Parody Song Title:

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

As I understand, Petra's original version is based on 1 Corinthians 1:18. The following rewrite is based on the story of someone who helps others until his resources are depleted, but who is ignored by others in his own time of need. I wish I could say the song is fictional, but it seems reasonable that similar events occur at least occasionally, and perhaps far more often.
You see a man in need, but turn ye not away.
He really needs your help, and you may need his someday.
The compassion of a man shines brighter than a gem;
As you'd have them do to you, do ye also unto them.

Fool's gold - their pain is sad to see.
Fool's gold - it could easily be me.
I will not stand here idly by
When I see my neighbor's spirit die.
I'll do for him all that I can
Until the river's dry.
Fool's gold...

The bills are coming due, but some may have to wait.
A late fee still is less than an unenlightened state.
They may say I cannot help all the ones who are in need,
But the key to happiness is not forged in human greed.

Fool's gold - their pain is sad to see.
Fool's gold - it could easily be me.
I will not stand here idly by
When I see my neighbor's spirit die.
I'll do for him all that I can
Until the river's dry.
Fool's gold...

Out here in the cold somewhere on Lonely Street
I could really use their help, but their selfishness is deep.
I'm the one who's foolish - gave it all away,
But my spirit told me that what I gave to them
Would come right back to me someday.

Fool's gold - their pain is sad to see.
Fool's gold - it could easily be me.
Fool's gold - their pain is sad to see.
Fool's gold - it could easily be me.
I will not stand here idly by
When I see my neighbor's spirit die.
I'll do for him all that I can
Until the river's dry.
Fool's gold...

Joseph Rhodes - February 12, 2016 - Report this comment
The background vocals at about 2:49 seem especially poignant, as if the angels were allowed to give the homeless, destitute man emotional or spiritual encouragement, but not food or physical warmth. Those of you who saw an ascended Daniel Jackson give Jack emotional encouragement and little else in Stargate: SG-1 when Jack was being tortured can probably relate.
