The Lyrics

Continuing the parodies honoring the Prime Ministers of my second-favorite country. Sir Wilfrid Laurier (pronounced "LAW-ree-ay", 1847-1919) was the man who brought them into the 20th Century, and the first Prime Minister of French extraction rather than British. With the "Fathers of Confederation," such as first PM Sir John A. Macdonald, still identifying with the British Empire, Laurier is often called "The First Canadian." His 15 consecutive years and four straight terms of majority governments remain national records, and he's on the five-dollar bill.
(instrumental opening)

Laurier
he's always on the run now.
Running from Quebec City
he's gonna lead us somehow.
You're going after Tories
leading Liberal Party.
They're playing same old stories.
Your votes are coming hearty.

And they always will remember
all the great things that you said
aspirations that you fed
Wilfrid Laurier!

Laurier!
(Laurier!)
And now you've got the numbers!
(Laurier!)
And now you run the government
(Laurier!)
that we'll be living under!

And they always will remember
French and English things that you said
sounding lovely in their heads
Wilfrid Laurier!

(instrumental break)

(Uh-huh! Uh-huh!)
Laurier!
Kept us out of Boer War.
Built a mighty new navy
in case we fight a shore war.
Keeping nice and sound our money.
Brought Alberta and Saskatchewan
into Provincehood in the right way.
Don't believe you've ever gone wrong.

But you really don't remember
free trade, that's no good, we said
turning voters on their head
Wilfrid Laurier!

Laurier!
(Laurier!)
The Tories have unfurled more!
(Laurier!)
Quebec, it don't want into this
(Laurier!)
the British cause in World War!
But you kept all your constituents
from being conscripted!
So you're honored when you're dead
Wilfrid Laurier!

(Laurier!)

(instrumental fadeout)
This leaves 1873-78, 1891-96, and 1911-2003.

Shoot! I left out a chorus. Double shoot! I had a great rhyme set up and forgot it: Rhyming "from the backbench" (of Parliament) with "first who was French!" Merde!
