Farmer’s Blues

Well the ‘nure needed spread that day, and it was a lot to haul
I knew the load was heavy, but I didn’t think it’d stall
then everything exploded and the shit began to fall
so baby here’s your mudders, get your pitchfork in your hand
making little money now, it’s so bad you just can’t stand
your day is twenty hours and the pay is less than grand
so many goin’ down like this, with their head caught in a noose

the buyers, the sellers, the neighbors who don’t care
mortgages, foreclosures, and funny deals to stay there
no matter if it’s livestock, grain sales or milk
you’ve got to pray for prices, ‘cause your sow’s ear isn’t silk
there’s plenty of shady characters, tryin’ to buy your fields
they all want your farm for a shopping mall or Hills
it’s the lure of land grab profit, it screws the farmers ev’ry deal
whoa, you’d understand it better, if your land they tried to use
it’s the ultimate entrapment, it’s the farmer’s blues

you won’t see it in the headlines, they hide it all away
they say it doesn’t matter, there’s plenty land today
but there sellin’ in Des Moines and their sellin’ in PA
they cut ‘em up and sell them off to people with no use for hay
it’s all been done for progress in this great US of A
you ask any sixties farmer, he’ll say there’s nothing we can do
from the office of the President, right down to me and you

it’s a losin’ proposition, in the end we ALL will lose
