The Lyrics

Ahh, the great fire of London back in 1666! All because of a baker leaving the oven on in his bakery! (BTW the street where this fire began was called 'Pudding Lane' How quaint!)
You could wonder how what it's said
You leave the oven burnin' up the bread
And there's a puff of smoke that makes you choke
You'll fall down on the cobbles as you escape the black smoke

And did you think this fool could put it out
Look at the flames, they're spreading out about
I got a scorched rear end and its burning fast,
And if you can see that while London's burning you just end up gassed

Don't you know London's burning quicker than it ever did
Spreading like a big wild fi-re, burning like a candle wick
London's burning after this accident
Sweeping up the debris of the fire and need some insurance

London's burning, up in flames!
London's burning, up in flames!

Now they try to put out the flames!
The hoses on the pump running out its lame
The fumes given off were from the baker's coal
And if you're were a lousy fireman you'd be back on the dole.

Don't you know London's smokin' faster than it ever did
Spreading like a big wild fi-re, looking like a pile of sticks
London's burning after this accident
Sweeping up the debris of the fire and need some insurance

London's burning, great big flames!
London's burning, great big flames!

(guitar bridge)

Don't you know London's burning quicker than it ever did
Spreading like a big wild fi-re, burning like a load of twigs
London's burning after this accident
Clean'n up the ashes of the fire and need some insurance

London's burning, yellow flames!
London's burning, red hot flames!
London's burning, deadly flames!
London's burning, flamin' flames!

Interesting concept. Perhaps you could do a sequel about the Chicago fire and Mrs. O'Leary's cow.

smokin'...not nearly enough songs in here about famous conflagrations

Thanks Steve K. and Alvin. This took me some time to write as every time I re-read it, i kept making corrections here and there. I do like the way the energetic sound of the OS suits this though.

Good historical parody...do a few myself, now and again.

Great OS and tough to pace (like most of Elton's song are). Really good job here, Jason. Fives I'm handing.

Also, Mrs o'Leary's cow supposedly ignited the Great Chicago fire! I admire these pieces of history, sir.

AFW: Thanks, I'll check them out when I get the chance.

Red Ant: Thanks for that! Its great to be back here!

ChicagoCakes: Thanks.

Good stuff Jason! Yeah, historical parodies are fun. Free plug time! M&P have done the Chicago fire: "Too Late: All Burned. Damn Cow!" but I would love to see someone have another go at it! The more the merrier :) Again, good stuff, and welcome back, Jason :)

I can see the unobomber has struck here!!! Hope its not the same one who is relentlessly unobombing Max's parodies.

Probably wanted to bake the whole city, notice the last three digits of the year.

(SOTM) Interesting concept, and I like how it built up. 1st line didn't make sense at all to me. The last line in the chorus was a clinker.
Jason - July 11, 2008 - Report this comment
Agrimorfee, the first line refers to how the fire was started by the baker carelessly leaving his oven on and the fellow Londoners gossiping about him once the fire was finally extinguished!

Nicely done, J. The pacing was excellent, and the composition was very well put together. I'm also handing you a 5-5-5. Keep up the good work!

(SOTM) A bit of a history lesson for me on how the fire started. Well done, the pacing worked and it was entertaining.
Peter Andersson - July 20, 2008 - Report this comment
SOTM - Except for the cheesy video TOS is actually a smoker, nice to see another EJ song here except for that one that got famous when Princess Di went down in flames, OK, so those are the two I know but anyway...
McKludge - July 22, 2008 - Report this comment
SOTM - God I hated that video. Pacing seemed a touch off in the first two verses compared to the video.
And back in 1666, you didn't exactly leave the oven "on," since it was all wood burning stoves back then. 444

(SOTM) At least the Great Fire killed the rats that were carrying the plague. Interesting idea here, Jason, needed just a tad more of the funny, but history's hard to get a laugh out of.

Very intresting topic to write about. History is always good parody fodder although it's hard to make it funny.

Thought I'd commented on this one before - great idea & title sub, competently executed.

(SOTM) One of your better writes overall, though not the most hilarious topic, more of a history parody which is cool in it's own way.

(SOTM-Jun-08) Love Elton John parodies - Lord knows I've done my share of them and this is very good. Would have liked the choruses varied. It's a bit extra work but it gives the reader something else to read unlike the OS which it works well on, in parody I believe most songs should vary chorus, especially Elton John and Billy Joel parodies. But I still like it and it is a fresh an idea as freshly baked bread.
Red Ant - July 31, 2008 - Report this comment
Probably unintentional on your part, Jason, but using an Elton John song to describe London on fire, with lines like "I got a scorched rear end and its burning fast"...I'm reading too much into this I guess. =) If you were aiming that way, you could have put in some killer lines, like "Spreading like a big wild fi-re, like a candle in the wind". Still, very good work here.
