 (MP3)
Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"You Don't Have to Like Me Darling Starling"

Parody Written by:

Royce Miller

The Lyrics

this is about the characters in "Silence of the Lambs"
It's all you can do, look at me and not start cryin
And I have no choice but to remain
But you don't have to like me, darling Starling
Hannibal is not a pretty name

You don't have to call me Mr. Lecter
You don't have to call me Mr. Hyde
I'm lookin oh so close at your expression--
The faintest hint of fear is in your eyes

And I'll stare at you as long as you will let me
I'll try to analyze and pick your brain
You don't have to like me, darling Starling
Cause cannibal is not a pretty game

Spoken:
I'll be breakin out of this here prison
And I'll be runnin fast out in the rain
Lookin for another tasty victim
There's just something missing from my brain

And I'll stare at you as long as you talk to me
I'll stare hard and pick apart your brain
You don't have to like me, darling Starling
Hannibal ain't pretty
Cannibal ain't pretty
Hannibal Lecter ain't a pretty name

Now, if that ain't a Country and Western song to end all Country and Western songs...
"Well, since they let that Lector out of prison
Dang' ol' FBI ain't been the same
Don't you know that Hannibal's a cannibal?
Likes a nice Sauterne with pickled brain
...or something like that ;-)

PS Congratulations on having the first David Allan Coe parody on amiright - have to admit, if I'd realized there was anyone else around who listens to him, I'd probably have done one myself.

Thanks Phil for reading it--it looks like we're the only ones who know the song--or maybe not everyone was riveted by the eyes of Anthony Hopkins--anyway, I like your lines--you could have done a better job than I did.

That can't be the perfect country song. There's nothin in it about mama, or being drunk, or pickup trucks. lol, nice job.

Jordan - David Allan Coe writes an additional final verse to the original, which makes it the *perfect* country and western song:
I was drunk the day my mama got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in the pickup truck
She got ran over by a damned old train.
:-)

Good one. Coe meets EL&P for some Brain Salad Surgery for a little part 9 of Karn Evil and a little Lecter specter.. I love it. This has class. 5x5x5!

Actually, David Allan Coe didn't write the song -- if you'd've actually listen to it, you'd know that his "good friend" Steve Goodman wrote it (and the additional final verse). I'm a big fan of the original song. The parody is okay except for the pacing. The pacing is pretty bad. But the idea is pretty good. It's better than a lot that get posted.

E.A. -- From my point, I knew that David Allan Coe only sang the song--which is what we're asked for when we post material, the original artist. But I appreciate you reading my parody, and I appreciate the fact that Phil knows some David Allan Coe. What he said about the original song being the ultimate country song--my sentiments, exactly.

Yes, EW - I realised that as soon as I posted the comment (especially as Coe does say that on the recording), but was basically too lazy to do anything about it at the time :-)
