I was at a gun rights rally on Saturday, and you're right Jeff ... All any of these gun nuts could talk about is just how totally "OK" it was that 20 small children were gunned down by a maniac. I was just a few blocks away from the rally in Topeka. Attending a gun show. No one thinks it's OK for nut jobs to shoot school kids. Obama's plans would not prevent such murders. They are nothing more than an attack on a culture he does not like. If you are a liberal examine the laws passed in some states requiring sonograms, waiting periods, parental consent, and other regulations and restrictions on abortion. Have they actually prevented abortions, or are they just obstacles thrown up by the right to annoy a culture or practice the right does not approve of? The NRA is about 1 in 20 of American gun owners. Still, 4 million people with guns and murderous intent could shut the country down. But, absent the murderous intent, they are totally harmless. By the way, the 2nd Amendment does not guarantee any right, it tells the government that this pre-existing right shall not be infringed. At the time of the Nation's founding, individuals owned portable arms, swords, pistols, muskets. The state was expected to provide "tents and field pieces", the logistics and heavy weapons. But there was no law to prevent wealthy individuals from owning cannon and warships. In fact, the only licensing power the federal government has, under the Constitution, is to license private vessels to act as naval auxiliaries during wartime, a concession to the laws which regarded private armed ships not flying a national flag as pirates.
