The Lyrics

Once again, the narrator is our fearless appointed Leader With a Purpose.
Saw a werewolf with a slice o' toast in his hand
dripping maple syrup all over his pants.
Must be one o' those hippie peacenik guys
who only get their toast or their fries from France.
Ow-woooooooo! Werewolves of Paris! Ow-woooooooo!
Ow-woooooooo! Werewolves of Paris! Ow-woooooooo!

He's gone inspectin' 'round Saddam Hussein's door
but that dictator won't let him in.
My U.N. resolution got vetoed last night.
Werewolves of Paris again!
Ow-woooooooo! Werewolves of Paris! Ow-woooooooo!
Ow-woooooooo! Werewolves of Paris! Ow-woooooooo!

He's the hairy-handed skank who lives on the Left Bank
askin' a French hooker for a feeler.
You better stay away from him, he'll sell you out now, Jim.
Ha! I'd like to meet his dealer!
Ow-woooooooo! Werewolves of Paris! Ow-woooooooo!
Ow-woooooooo! Werewolves of Paris! Ow-woooooooo!

Well, I saw Michael J. Fox walking with Chirac
doing the werewolves of Paris.
I saw Jason Bateman walking with Chirac
doing the werewolves of Paris.
I saw a werewolf drinking a white Russian at Harry's New York Bar
and his hair was perfect.
Ow-woooooooo! Werewolves of Paris! Ha! Draw blood!
Ow-woooooooo! Werewolves of Paris! Ow-woooooooo!
Michael J. Fox starred in "Teen Wolf," Jason Bateman in "Teen Wolf, Too." Harry's New York Bar is a Paris landmark, as Trader Vic's is a London landmark mentioned in the original. Oh yeah, "Vive la France!"

Just found out "Trader Vic's" is not a London instutition as I claimed, but is actually a chain, with 21 outlets around the world, including the original in Palo Alto, south of San Francisco, the one in London mentioned in Zevon's song, one in Chicago, Zevon's hometown, and outlets in Germany, Japan and the Middle East...but not in Paris. (The closest ones to my New Jersey home are in Chicago and Atlanta. Nuts.) Founder Victor Bergeron, now 82, supposedly invented the Mai Tai. And Harry's New York Bar, whose Paris outlet was home to Ernest Hemingway and the "Lost Generation," and claims to have invented the Bloody Mary, is also now a chain, in New York, Paris, Berlin and other cities.

I hope the would-be Geldof's comment was facetious. Otherwise, he totally missed the point of the parody. It's insulting those who pick on France. Look, I know France isn't exactly innocent in this whole Iraq business, but at least its leaders didn't go to war without properly justifying it to their people. Look at it this way: If America didn't help France out in 1918 and 1944, Jacques Chirac would be speaking German today; but if France didn't help America out in 1778, Georgie Bush would be speaking English today!
