Adtually, I have no idea. I just went for the rhyme, thought "I guess these would be pants you moon people in" and off it went. (The parody, not the pants)

Those pants are known as chaps, and not many people at all ever expose their tussies. It's more of a novelty, than the norm.

What's funny is I was thinking about those slick-looking getups from the eighties and didn't even think about "I guess these would be pants you moon people in" til you mentioned it. I never wore that stuff so for all I knew they had flaps in the back. Anyway, "Oops, clumsy me!" is funny in any context.
