The Lyrics

Another one I took too long to do. From what I've heard, the original was recorded in '68 but not a hit until '72, hence "70s." And I'm talking about homework with the language, though I could've gone ethnic and said, "Nights doing Latins, 'cause I love J-Lo's end."
(long instrumental opening)

Nights doing Latin
never reaching the end.
Papers I've written
teachers don't commend.
Tenses I've always missed
with these lips before.
Just how to speak it
I can't say anymore.

Quoniam te amo
Etiam te amo
Quoniam te amo

Gazing at people
across Europe's land
where once the great legions
Caesar did command.

From it we've gotten
the Spanish and French
Italian, true, also
but I'm stuck on the bench.

Quoniam te amo
Etiam te amo
Quoniam te amo

(instrumental bridge)

Nights doing Latin
never reaching the end.
Papers I've written
teachers don't commend.
Tenses I've always missed
with these lips before.
Just how to speak it
I can't say anymore.

Quoniam te amo
Etiam te amo
Quoniam te amo

(long instrumental bridge)

Breathe deep the language of Rome.
Watch light fade inside your dome.
Bedsitter doing your homework, lament
another day's useless energies spent.

Imperial teachers ramble, not done.
Student cries out for relief and has none.
Mother wonders, "What are you learning, my son?"
Senior citizens are glad that stuff's done.

Cold-hearted hack, teaches at night.
Steals the hours from our sight.
Conjugate the verbs tonight.
But he decides which is right
and adds to your confusion.

(long instrumental close)

Latin may not have been my ancient language of choice, though I can certainly identify with the frustration you felt studying. Your imagery and fact-citing were well done; so was your use of actual Latin in the chorus. (I tried to use some of the language I studied when writing "Old Norse Is Insane", but couldn't make anything fit the pacing...) III times V for you!

Optime! Anybody know what 'to parody' is in Latin? They had loads of smart satirists, so they must have had a word for it.

You really are the smartest guy I know, Michael. I LOVE that about you. =) And take heart...the one givers are obviously unschooled idiots who simply didn't understand the parody...or they sensed that I would love it, and were jealous in advance of my superfluous praises...; ) Either way...you're a winner!!

Don't know why I missed this one when I looked for "Nights" parodies - either way, it's not quite the same as my one (for a start, it actually makes sense ;-) . Bene.
