The Lyrics

I wrote this on September 12 2001. If it offends anyone I apologise
That September
in downtown Manhattan
it came out of nowhere
or that's how it seemed
that bright blue morning
turned into a nightmare
such a cruel rude awakening
from the American Dream

Like an image in a movie
We've all seen a thousand times before
those proud twin towers exploded into flames
like a sword of retribution
they struck those mighty blows
bringing death and devastation that dreadful day

Oh America
you lost your innocence and faith
all those hopes for the future lay buried in the dust
and freedom oh freedom
was it just a sweet illusion
but who can you turn to now
- who can we trust?

And all the pain and the grief and the children crying
the widows weeping - so many dying
their final terror so heartlessly replayed
And who knows what tomorrow brings
I guess war's the game we really know how to play

But we can imagine
John Lennon said it all those years ago
But I guess we're all just too human
ruled by fear and greed and hate
It sure is rainin
But I don't see no rainbow above us
but we've got to find an answer
there has to be answer
if we can't find an answer soon
it may be too late

This is from the heart Martha. I think your parody reflects many thoughts and emotions, that we all shared on September 12, 2001. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks for the kind remarks Diva. It was a terrible time..
Adagio - February 13, 2004 - Report this comment
It still cuts to the heart, Martha. Thank you for the parody.

I am one of those Americans who was affected by what I can only describe as Post-September-11-Stress-Syndrome. It really messed me up, I am not kidding. Maybe the fact that I was working on the 15th floor of a sky-scraper located in the Financial District in downtown Boston contributed to my emotional reaction. Oh well. Life goes on, but we must never forget - and thank you, Martha, for helping us all to continue to remember.

Thanks for your thoughts JohnnyD that must have been terrible.... I guess you found it hard to sleep properly for a long time and got really down...
Johnny D - February 13, 2004 - Report this comment
It was pretty awful, Martha. I managed to sleep reasonably well, but during my waking hours I would get attacks of anxiety and fear. I guess I was kind of down, too. I like to think that I came out of it a stronger person.

By the way, Martha, I requested that the first of my comments here be deleted - that's the comment where I accidentally called you "Diva" instead of "Martha".

I reflect on 9-11 often. Lets hope and pray such a horrible event will never come to pass again. I too, felt down for many months following the attack, Johnny. I think eveyone has a diffrent ways to deal with the loss, and different triggers that make us uncomfortable.

It was an unprecedented event. We see awful things unfoldong daily everywhere but when the circumstances are closer to our own subjective perceptions of the world it inevitabley hits harder. I was working in the City of London financial district on that day and a colleague who had a TV news feed onto his laptop told me just after the second plane hit he said there were several planes unaccounted for. I just left and went straight to the underground train and sat there ,, the guy opposite me said that the Stock Exchange building where he worked had already been evacuated I was amazed at how quickly they reacted.....

Tnank you Brigitta What a nice thing to say. I foiund writing that song was therapeutic at the time. I have never dared to perform it for fear of it being considered in bad taste/ sentimental etc... except once at a chikldrens camp with my daughter stiing round a campfire at night I sang it unaccompanied......I felt that children would not be judgemental......
Birgitta - February 14, 2004 - Report this comment
I think that's great Martha.And they don't ever care if ya sing off key either. ; ) I don't think it's bad taste at all.I think it's truthful.(And a gentle reminder.)Thx again.
