The Lyrics

In the 1960 Olympics at Rome, an unknown Ethiopian, Abebe Bikila, running in his bare feet, stunned the sports world by winning the marathon (in a world record time) to become the first African to win an Olympic medal. After Bikila’s break through victory, African runners have come to dominate distance running in the Olympics.
It’s Abebe Bikila’s big race,
And his stomach-wrenching pace … wins first place.
Though the world’s best came to run
In expensive shoes, not one could beat
This athlete’s feat.

Ev’ry day at the break of dawn,
A shepherd boy showed his speed and brawn
And just kept runnin’ on.
He wasn’t just another shepherd,
And outrunning all the leopards there,
Helped pay his fare.

But Adidas wanted him to lose,
They hate runners on the news
Who wear no shoes.

Yes, it takes a lot of courage
To bear the hopes of a continent,
But he was sent.
And following Bikila’s surprise,
The sports world won’t look the same,
He lit the flame!
Bikila (8/7/32 – 10/25/73) again won the gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics (this time wearing shoes), again setting a world record, but was a victim of an automobile accident and disease and was dead 9 years later. He would have been 75 years old today.

Perfect title sub, well-written and timely parody, John. Imagine if Michael Jordan played barefoot - we'd probably be saying "Nike who?" now. Coincidentally, my security code is SPeeD.

Great history lesson about an awesome athlete.

Talk about a trailblazer. Too bad the New York City Marathon wasn't around in his time, although I wouldn't recommend running barefoot through the City. And how many rings does the Olympic flag have? Five, of course.

With Bikila, the pacing was as good as it gets, just like this parody.

Thank you for the votes and comments. MP, in a way, Bikila has run in New York. In the movie Marathon Man, when Dustin Hoffman's character is escaping on foot from the bad guys (somewhere in Manhattan), he has a vision of Bikila setting the pace. But I agree - probably not a good idea to go shoeless in the City.

nice tribute, and clever sub JJ - lucky Kramer wasn't there handing him a takeaway cappuccino as he entered the final straight - 555
