The Lyrics

Stephen Stills has written a rather sizeable number of quality songs over his many years in music. A few years back I began to notice the music from some of these songs was being used as background in Television and Radio Commercials. "Love the One You're With" was one song whose melody I recognized in, I kid you not, a radio ad for "Levitz Furniture".
When your song has gotten old, and you don't remember the last one you sold
Your bank account slips away because your best work was done yesterday

And there's a store wants to buy your tune, and though your lyrics they will ruin
But if you can't write anymore good songs, buddy, sell out all your hits
Sell out all your hits, sell out all your hits, sell out all your hits

Don't be angry, don't feel shame, you need the money so you're not to blame
You wrote the songs, they're yours to sell, people need sofa's, so what the hell

And there's a store wants to buy your tune, and though your lyrics they will ruin
But if you can't write anymore good songs, buddy, sell out all your hits
Sell out all your hits, sell out all your hits, sell out all your hits

It's appalling you've sunk to this. To use your song pushing sofa beds
You've got some bills, you gotta pay or you'll see your beamer get towed away.

And there's this store wants to buy your tune, and yes, your lyrics they will ruin
But since you can't write anymore good songs, buddy, sell out all your hits
Sell out all your hits, sell out all your hits, sell out all your hits

Um... I actually HAD more than one hit?

I agree. For a similar thought see my "Sellin' a Product". (Eleanor Rigby)

I'm new to "interactive" Internet stuff. Didn't realize I could reply to comments until I was looking around at other parodies. If that is the "real" Stephen Stills I know and like a lot of your stuff (quite fond of 1st "Manassas" double-album). For whatever reason the pacing of your songs seem to be well adaptable to parody so there's at least one more in the works. Thanks.

excellent message....i thought hearing zeppelin selling cadillacs was bad enough, but the one that really makes me shake my head is "heroin" (without words, of course)..being used to sell....i think, nissans...who are they trying to reach with that one ?

Alvin, Thanks again. I notice from YOUR Author's page that we seem to have a lot of overlap in our musical memory banks and taste. Which I think is really cool. I also did a similar themed parody to Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth", which of course is also a Stephen Stills composition. I don't know if you recall it but back in the 80's the music from that started popping up as background in "MIller Beer" Commercials, prompting my parody "It's Worth A Beer". I haven't written one yet on it but they also used Arthur Lee's ("Love") instrumental part with the flamenco-style guitars and the Herb Alpert type horns from "Aloneagainor..." in a Miller Commercial. "Forever Changes", ahhh...another great album from that era...I don't know if parody is possible with an album that is itself so very self-styled and cryptic. I wouldn't mind giving a shot at one using "Love's" version of "Little Red Book" (originally written by Burt Bacharach, who I understand went slightly bananas when he heard what Lee turned his song into). I don't even have a modest clue as to what the Bacharach original sounds like, but I doubt I'd like it as much as Lee's take on it.

(ABC's) Interesting take on Ad parodies. Although I find most of them to be lame that I hear on TV. Maybe someday these ad guys will discover this site and put some of us to work - or not. Nice read Paul.

Funny how most of the songs I remember well enough to comment on are in the same decade range that most of the others remember (late 60s-early 80s). It *is* a little sad, though understandable, when the original artist has to let some company turn his old hits into advertising jingles just to pay his bills. 5's all round!

Very good parody, Paul. The beamer line was my fave.

(ABC) "people need sofa's, so what the hell" .... what a priceless line, I love it! Great job, Paul.

How did I miss this classic? I must have been out shopping that day.

Michael - that's OK...I missed your Feb 15th comment by about a month. Thanks! Anyway, it was in the first group of 5 parodies I posted way back there in November, 2003 when I first decided to try posting a couple things I had written over the years to amuse myself and perhaps a couple other folks I knew....
