The Lyrics

Well, I'm really developing a fondness for these "2 songs in 1" parody pieces. Today's entry goes back to Steely Dan's 1st Album to use the musical structure of "Do It Again" to receive the lyrical theme of James Taylor's mellow "You've Got A Friend".
(Instrumental Intro)

When you're down and you are troubled
and you need a helping hand
You just knock upon my door
and I'll be there for you, man
Whoa, and if it seems that sometimes
that just nothing can go right
You can close your eyes; think of me
and I'll brighten your dark nights

Yeah, you come back, Jack, you've got a friend
We'll turn everything around
You come back, Jack, you've got a friend

If the sky that is above you
should turn dark and full of rain
all you have to do is call me
and I'll try to ease your pain
If you find that North wind blowing
Winter, spring or even fall
It don't matter what the season
all you have to do is call

Yeah, it's a fact, Jack, you've got a friend
I'll be there if you just call
That's a fact, Jack, you've got a friend

(Instrumental break)

When it seems your friends desert you
sometimes people can be cold
Don't you let what they do hurt you
Don't you let them take your soul
Darkened clouds can mean bad weather
but don't let that get you down
Keep that head of yours together
and just call my name out loud

'Cause it's a fact, Jack, you've got a friend
No, I'll never let you down
It's a fact, Jack, you've got a friend

(Instrumentals to fade and end)

JB - Thanks! Seriously, I've only just started doing them. I had seen a few mentions about someone trying to or actually doing them, but I felt exactly like you seem to now - totally intimidated by the concept. You know, I just sat here trying to give you some rough suggestions of procedural steps you might try and after about 25 minutes I had the most convoluted, ridiculous, instructive-sounding but totally unhelpful hundred or so words that anyone could possibly blather forth with any degree of seriousness and sincerity. Just deleted it to save you the trouble of reading and me the embarrassment of having written it. Here some other words to replace them that I hope are actually of some real assistance - I guess you would pick a song with a nice, clean "hook" that is at least fairly repetitive. Probably want the song to have a fairly repetitive and recognizable pace structure, too. Then look for songs with lines that rhyme or could match to that. I've been tossing song titles around in my head that seem promising. So, thus far I've done "Let It Ride/Mama Tried", :"I'm A Believer/Dream-Weaver", and "Do It Again/You've Got a Friend". You can see some patterns there as far as syllable count, rhyme and matching cadence. From there you've just got to roll up your sleeves and see if there is enough 'meat' to your story-line song to fill the structure of the music song. I've had a few ideas so far that I haven't been able to work though. Give it a try! Hey! A free suggestion - you might pick an early Beatles song for your first effort. Virtually all of them had good hook lines, solid structure and straight-forward pacing. Good luck!

MacPhisto - Thanks! I see you've put some up in the last couple days but unfortunately the originals have been "DKTOS" to me. I wasn't on the site too much for the better part of this month so I might have missed anything during that period. I keep meaning to try and look back at the period I wasn't around but....I'm also trying to write regular parodies, these "2 for 1" numbers and I've been dabbling with trying to record some parodies as well - not to mention working on some non-parody writing where I'm working with some stuff my late brother wrote and trying to tie it together with some of my own thoughts and words. No wonder I can't remember which one is my ass and which one is my elbow...

This sort of thing is always tricky. I do things like this musically. I recorded "Eight Days a Week" as if it were "Honky Tonk Woman". But musically and wordwise, the farther afield you go, the funnier it is.

Paul...DKTOS, but I know your pacing...good song.

JD, appreciate it.... Rick, alvin, & Adagio...Thanks. Rick, yeah, on this one it was more about expressing the original thought with a bit more attitude behind it, which "Do It Again's" ambience does. On the "Let It Ride/Mama Tried" one I think I do more of what you are suggesting here. You might take a look at how the storyline moves forward in that one...Alvin, one of my personalities has been specifically assigned to keep an eye out for potential "schizo-dies". Adagio, will send you something.
