Song Parodies -> "The Author"

Original Song Title:

"The Boxer"

Original Performer:

Simon and Garfunkel

Parody Song Title:

"The Author"

Parody Written by:

Red Ant

The Lyrics

[short guitar intro]

Sing a tune for your joy,
And my story's often bold,
I have pondered the existance,
Of a folder full of stumbles,
Sub-par crappiness

I'll try my best,
will amount here's, what I hope endears,
might pull it off with zest?
hmm hmm hmm hmm-mmm.........................

When I turn a song into parody,
It's no chore but a joy,
Though the odd-ditties and wonders,
Might require some imagi-nation punning's rare

High and low, seeking out the golden oldies,
That the av'rage person knows,
Carefully avoiding disco 'cause it blows!

I write lines
Write the lines and find the rhymes
Write a line
Take the time to find a rhyme, whate'er comes to mind..

Tasking many works outrageous,
I've come looking for a song,
and I've hit "The Boxer"..
Just a play on many words and changing them anew

My duty's fair,
There are lines that I've worked so hard-on,
A Dublin-tendre there?
la la la la la la

[instrumental break]

My delight
My delight to write the lines
Write a line
Take the time to find a rhyme, whate'er comes to mind..

And I'm wond'ring now did Simon know,
If silence has a sound?,
How profound!

Words come back to me like emptyness in harmony..
Comfort me-ee...,
Homeward bound!

Hear the lyrics of an author,
I'm a writer by my trade,
With hilarious reminders,
Of every spoof that makes you laugh,
I'll stop now though I'm quite proud,
This has taken final shape,
From beginning to the ending,
But this outro still remains,
hmm mmm mmm..

I write lines
Write the lines for your delight
Write a line
Take the time to find a rhyme, whate'er comes to mind

(chorus x7)
My delight to write the lines
Write a line
Take the time to find a rhyme, whate'er comes to mind..

[Sung very quitely at the 4:45 mark]
"All lies in jest"? My ass!

[short outro, no "lie"]

Masterfully done, Red...this is really well done...5's ~ ~ ~

I thought overall the parody was very good. I couldn't get the "whate'er comes to mind" bit to fit though. Arwen's already commented on my favourite line

Excellent ! 555

Top write, Antman, on a subject every Amirighter can relate to. My Unfinished/Rejects folder is bulging...not much of what I actually start gets finished and submitted. Great job. 555

"Carefully avoiding disco 'cause it blows!" Good that you follow the advice of the late, great Harry Chapin: "You don't wanna mess with disco B.S., no matter what!" This "Boxer" rewrite is a knockout.

555. After I listen to the download, I realized that I have heard the song before, I'm not very familiar with it, but the chorus definelty pace perfectly and the rest of the lyrics flowed quite well, excellent job! =)

Your song is a K.O.! 555! Arwen and Michael mentioned my favorite line.
Dominic L. - October 03, 2005 - Report this comment
I noticed as I listened to this song again to read this parody that it's one of the few songs by them with more than just guitar... I give you 5's

Thanks Arwen, Paul, Karen, Rick C, Kristof, Alvin, Carol, Michael P, Step-chan, PMS and Dominic L.

Karen: TOS has 5 "lie/la" there, "whate'er comes to mind" 5 syllables as well.

carol: I can't believe the "1s" person hit this; maybe s/he would explain that vote.

Adagio skipped this? I know the URL was broken this morning, maybe she'll come back later.

Glad you all liked the "disco" line, though I must say there are a few other good ones as well. Did anyone notice the bottom comment?

Arwen and MP pinched my favourite line, the disco one, but "A Dublin-tendre there" and the sound of silence lines were also great gets, Red Ant - 555

Here I am, Red Ant! And thanks for pointing this out to me...I love it! Especially the first verse. You really got the spirit of the flow and pace! Needless to say...5's :D

Red took The Boxer down in 555.

Red Ant, I think you did a great job with the pacing; obviously, many people liked this and said so. It's not an easy song to parody. The only reason that I would tend not to read a parody like this, just from the title, is that parodies about writing are not my favorite...we've all done some, I guess, but I scan the titles and find ones that I think are interesting and read them. There used to be some people that I would read, just because of who they were; but I don't do that now. I stick to my "title" rule, and I feel that my comments are more honest that way. I might miss some really good parodies that way, but that's the breaks. I'm surprised that you gave a hoot about what I thought, after all the comments you got.
Red Ant - October 06, 2005 - Report this comment
Thank you Royce for the look, one reason I wanted you to look at this is that I think you've parodied this OS 3 times now (which I will check out shortly) so I'm assuming you like and know TOS quite well (and you are correct, this wasn't easy to parody), and more importantly value your (and everyone elses) comments highly, even if they sometimes conflict with the majority here. You gave this an honest evaluation; which when it is all said and done is all I can ask.
AFW - October 07, 2005 - Report this comment
This is really good, Red...a fine soliloquy of what we do...and what everyone can relate to....a real classic...great job...sorry, I missed it, originally...glad you made the reference..top fives vote

I'll have to do a S & G parody one of these days, but you all do raise the bar so much that I'm not content with the ideas I've got so far. Oh well, that's half the point of hanging out here I guess. :-)
Red Ant - November 05, 2005 - Report this comment
Thanks Peter, what's the other half? ;-)
Peter Andersson - November 20, 2005 - Report this comment
A bit late now, but I think that what I ment when I wrote that comment was that half the point is the process of writing in itself and that somebody else than oneself is reading it, and that the other half is reading other peoples stuff and beyond enjoying it for the sheer fun also enjoying how it comes to influence ones own writing and the ideas one choose to go with.

ABC3 - it started out a bit awkward (extra syllable in the first line) but the rest of the song, especially the chorus, was quite good.
Red Ant - June 24, 2006 - Report this comment
Thanks Peter, Paul, tomario, Max and Ethan. Ethan, will all due respect, you are incorrect about the first line being off-paced.

Original Lyrics: "I am just a poor boy"
Parody Lyrics: "Sing a tune for your joy"

Both are six syllables, all with the correct emphasis.

Red Ant - July 06, 2006 - Report this comment
Thanks Agrimorfee, Stu, Johnny D, Matthias and Arwen. Stu, necessity prompted that, as "double entendre" was one syllable too many. It took a while to figure that one out.
