Parody Song Title:

"First Row Transition Metal"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Transition metals are strictly defined as elements with ions having partially-filled d sub-shells, the first row from Scandium to Zinc have incomplete 3d sub-shells. Although electron shells are usually filled from the inside out (i.e. 1, 2, 3 etc in order), the 4s subshell sits at a lower energy level than the 3d, so it fills up first. Elements which can lose one or two electrons easily are usually metallic (that's pretty much what a metal is: positively charged nuclei in a cloud of loose electrons, hence the way they can conduct electricity).

Chemically this is accurate, in that you could use it for your chemistry revision. But enough of the lecture, on with the song.

Where you see a number and a letter, they should be read as number-letter (e.g. 4s is pronounced "four-ess" not "fours")
Count electrons in their shells
Shells 1 and 2 are full, 3s as well
4s has two, sometimes just one
It's filled before 3d, so
It's a first row transition metal
3d's incomplete
It is a first row transition metal
3d's incomplete

First there's Scandium
Titanium
V is Vanadium
Cr - Chromium
Then Manganese
Iron, Cobalt
And Nickel, Copper, Zinc
They're the first row transition metals
And that's right - I think
They're the first row transition metals
Yes it's right, I think

The electrons in
The 4s shell
They're lost so easily
All these elements are metals
See how they shine,
And if they're oxidised
There's even more besides:
For a first row transition metal
Has coloured oxides
Yes a first row transition metal
Has colored oxides

Billy - unfortunately, teaching doesn't pay well enough ;-)
Rick - I think that'd be a great idea: why not start a topic on the messageboard to see what others think?
