As a kid I loved watching Ginger and Fred
when they did a certain kind of dance,
the kind where their toes were a-tapping—
it always kept me entranced, oh yeah!

Loved it when they were getting tappy,

And I loved Gene Kelly’s range o’
moves, especially those he made
ain’t talkin’ about no cha-cha
but when metal shanks landed on parquet.

Later I watched Gregory [Hines] in tails
flashin’ ’cross the floor like he’d float
I’d watch those shoes lift in a jeté;
with his feet he could emote.

Snappy…happy. tappy….
