The Lyrics

Been reading Daphne du Maurier's book 'Rebecca'. Rod Stewart, in 'Maggie May', reminds me of the protagonist. No, really, he does!
"Call me Maxim," you said, I get stammers when near to you
You're over forty and I act like I'm barely out of school
I know you're just being kind, and I shouldn't really mind
Oh Maxim, if I could have tried any more...
I was longing to see your home, you were anxious of being alone
You stole my heart, and Rebecca won yours first

The morning room where the dogs relax is her private place
And the parties and the menus, she did everything
I just make the feeblest jokes, I'm a child you need to coax
Oh Maxim, why don't you require any more?
Manderley is no home - I feel so scared and alone
Compared to her, I'm a girl you can do without

All I wanted was a friend to play with on the sand
But you're much older
And bolder, and colder, can't work you out
You once didn't come to bed
I so wish I could get in your head
Oh Maxim, could you have said any more?
And when you're away from home, I feel guilty to be alone
She has your heart, you hold mine there in your hand

Mrs. Danvers frightens me so, like a teacher back at school
She loved your poor dead wife who drowned in a hidden pool
I try to be a rock and I'm sand, but I'm here if you wave your hand
Oh Maxim, I wish we'd never come to this place
She makes a low class fool of me
And I'm as weak as a fool can be
She stole your heart and I'll love you anyway

I wish we had never come to this place
I might understand one of these days

Great. It has been years since I read that book and was surprised to see a song about it.
