The Lyrics

Is this the real end?
Or just a big mistake?
Caught in a downtrend
No demand for the cars I make

Hopin' it's lies
But fearin' demise for me

I'm just a poor boy
I need some sympathy
Because I'm obsolete, out-of-touch
A little late, little much
Anyway the jaws clutch
Nothing good will happen to me
To me

Mama, just turned a bolt
Now it's time to take a break
'Fore my finger starts to ache

Mama, I was having fun
But now they've gone and thrown it all away

Mama, ooo
Didn't mean to get laid off
When I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, although nothing good will happen

Too late, the line is down
Sends shivers down my spine
No more perq's or overtime
Goodbye everybody - I got laid off
Gotta leave you all behind and look for work

Mama, ooo - (anyway the jaws clutch)
I don't want to go
I sometimes wish I'd never been hired at all

I see the lines and rows of autos in the lot
Not a Ford, not a Dodge, not a single damn Chevy
German cars and Hondas - nothing that was built by me

Not Aveo, not a Cobalt,
Not a Sebring, not a Solstice,
Not a Focus, not a Vue, nor CTS

But I'm just a poor boy, looking for a bailout
He's just a poor boy, looking for a handout
Spare him his grief from this sad turnabout

Obsolete, out-of-touch - it was not my fault
Pissed us off! No, we know it was your fault - was your fault
Pissed us off! We know it was your fault - was your fault
Pissed us off! We know it was your fault - not my fault
Know it was your fault - not my fault (never)
Never, was your fault - not my fault
Never, not my fault - ooo
No, no, no, no, no, no, no -
Oh, my Miata, my Miata, my Miata, not my fault
Republicans have a devil put aside for me
For me
For me

So you think we should save you from poor loyalty
So you think we should save you from poor quality
Oh baby - took down the big three, baby
Just gotta get wise - just gotta see it's up to you

Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
Nothing good will happen
Till you face what's true
Just go out and purchase - only cars assembled by you

That's the way the jaws clutch...

Paid $1.75/reg gal. for gas this AM : I'm loving it!

Ditto everything said so far. (Not _my_fault, either. Havent' bought a "furrin'" car since the POS '71 Toyota that was my very first brand new car had hone semi-god year out of the 5 I owned it. Have since then happily driven a succession of Chrysler & Ford products, currently an '01 Dodge Grand Caravan, still with only rare non-routine maintenance at 140 kilomiles, and a '97 Ford Escort wagon rolling along similarly trouble-free at 98 kilomiles. Of course, that both escaped any servitude to teenage drivers may have helped'em survive.) :-)

Meant to add to previous comment -- ..Cakes - $1.75 in CA must be akin to "free." As of Sat, regular was averaging about $1.79 here in the D. C. area, but I bought a tankful at $1.49 in a MD 'burb. The elation was tempered by remembering that it wasn;t all _that_ long ago that _that_ price seemed horrendously high. :-( :-)

Sir Stan, I am deliriously happy about those current low gas prices! ! Almost as exciting as seeing popping Xmas bulbs! !

Outstanding title and outstanding parody. Excellent job of working in the automobile brands and satirically capturing the angst of a UAW worker.

Very great satire on the annoying as all hell oil problem America gasvto deal with...

Leo - It used to be standard or automatic - now it seems to be stranded and automanic. We're all being taken for a ride in the czar. Well done.

(ABC05N)

I read, voted and commented on this yesterday - I didn't realize that it was in a comp. at that time. This is well written.

Very good stuff! Made me laugh! Great theme; good points. Some overreliance on the original lyrics. $5.55 at the pump--ouch!

(ABC5) Hang on, this went from losing a job to not getting a car, there's this 'clutching jaws' theme going on and Matthias says it's about...the oil problem? I am very confused. That'll teach me not to pay attention to the news. Anyways, this was paced very well, but I can't say whether it's funny as I don't know what it's about. Ah well.
Stuart McArthur - August 19, 2009 - Report this comment
(ABC) see above - otherwise I'd make the exact same comment again - great writing Leo, and your comical use of car-names, and the perfect pacing they provided, gave it another dimension

I'd love to heat this performed at a union hall, heh heh. I liked the subs you worked in, though I'm drawing blanks on the "anyway the jaws clutch" lines. Great title and nice ending; certainly better than what has happened to US automakers.

(ABC) I was the first to comment, and now being laid off myself...and govermental bailout being an even bigger topic than ever before...I love it ieven more than before.

Leo. . .Leo. . .Leo. . .this was your very bestI've seen by you. . .and let me explain why. Your rhyming and the fact that we are all feeling it is part of it, but this is one of those rare occasions where you read a parody of A) A song that's been done a billion times, B) A parody that has used a decent amount of the OS, C) A politically charged topic, and D) A serious topic. . .normally those four things spell disaster for any parodist. . .but you used all four of those to your advantage. I think that I was just utterly impressed by the way you used the OS on itself, and on this song--which has many great parodies out there of it--that is not an accomplishment that can be understated. The other thing, this song has tricky rhymes, and spots where I catch mistakes all the time, as a recording parodist I can't help but cringe at those mistakes--yours paced so perfectly I could record this right along my own with little to no alterations--just great all around Leo--you will be in my top 5, possibly number one. ..just awesome
