The Lyrics

This song is inspired by continuing calls amongst educators for smart / cell phones and WiFi capable devices to be restricted in classrooms to help students to stay focused on a lesson and upon each other's contributions. If the case for restriction is made, at what age should it be implemented? And at what age should such a restriction be lifted? The first three verses are to be recited as a poem, then the key repeating theme and tempo of the Pink Floyd track is followed, ideally delivered by a chorus of youngsters. Some may perceive some teachers' resistance to embrace portable technology as a typical Luddite view, whilst others might regret that certain pupils' interests will be sidelined if their classmates have instant access to additional information.
Heads and teachers are in dispute
In a daily battle for attention.
Should they impound their pupils’ portable technology,
Or should instant communication be regarded
As a basic right in classrooms or detention?

Can teachers of language hold respect
If their governors and people we elect
Prefer a catchy soundbite to a statement of intent
That is structured in a way that we can follow?
Should arguments have substance not be hollow?

If the benefits of syntax disappear,
Will future dissertations be harder to interpret
Than the works of Edward Lear?
Should educators stay silent, losing their admirers
While smartphones spread among us like a virus?

We don’t need no punctuation,
We don’t like apostrophes,
We’re the texting generation,
Tapping fingers on our keys.

Hey, teacher, help them lock their phones!
All in all it’s just the latest way to seem cool,
All in all it’s just another way to look cool.

Upper case is used for shouting,
We’ll have no truck with proper nouns,
So don’t expect a capital letter
To indicate a local town.

Fancy fonts are a distraction,
When we send impulsive rants.
Don’t expect no semi-colons.
Question marks are utter pants!

Hey, teacher, help them lock their phones!
All in all it’s just the latest way to seem cool,
All in all it’s just another way to look cool.

Bullet points are all pervasive,
Attention spans are shrinking fast.
If you love your native language
Nail your colours to the mast!
In the opening line "Heads" is used as an abbreviation of "Headteachers". Edward Lear (1812-1888) was a famous writer of nonsense prose, poetry and limericks who was born in the London suburb of Holloway. "Truck," derived from the French word troque is now usually only heard in the negative. To "have no truck with" means to "have nothing to do with" or "have no time for". An example of that usage is cited in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1834.

I think you allowed your creativity to get out of control here. As much as I can appreciate the three stanzas for the poem, that outro verse does not fit well with the original to me. The headmaster would not be rhyming his anger like that.

One person attends class, records the lecture, and then distributes it to those who slept late. Phones aren't a distraction. They are the way lazy people get the lecture.

Simply put, pacing way off, but I dig the gist of your vibe.
